I was thinking about a couple of things last week. Main thing was why so many are thinking how we look will make us healthier. Thinking how we look will make us feel healthier. How come when we think of health we focus so much on looks and so little on how we feel? How come we think how we look will make us feel healthier? And little on how we feel from doing certain things for our health? Some comments I have heard this year when it comes to health, and performance. Why are women so vain? She could lose a bit of weight and probably perform better. To look attractive. This was an answer to a ..read more

Can your health goals be to just feel good? Of course it can. You can also have smaller goals like running more frequent, or a certain distance, lifting a certain weight or being better at a sport. What drives me a lot is my anticipation of how I will feel from doing a certain activity. I have also experienced how anticipating how hard things will be can dampen the whole experience. I have also seen how anticipating the uncomfortable feeling can lead to not taking action. To just switch the switch is not realistic. But you can learn how to use anticipation as your best form of mot ..read more

Do you need to warm up before a run? Yes! Always. There is no question about it. You might think that if you are walking some parts of your run it’s not as important. Or if you are planning on doing an easy run it’s not that necessary. Or I’m not that serious about my running. Everyone needs to warm up. Maybe you have been running for some time and you haven’t warmed up before most of your runs and that seems to be going just fine. Sure, but in all cases, this is what warming up will do and improve for you. Reduce the risk of injury and niggle. I will just come out of the gate and say that as a health professional, I don’t support pitching Cardio or Strength for weight loss against each other. You need both for health and both cardio and strength contributes with important benefits for weight loss. Pitching cardio vs strength for weight loss is old school by today’s standard! But yes, it does still happen. Putting them up against each other gives the notation there is only one option if weight loss is a goal for you. Or that you can do other things but they are not as effective. So that contributes to the somewhat extreme attitu ..read more

How important is strength work when you are starting out? It depends of course but the main thing when starting out is to increase your activity level. Strength work is highly important for your long term health. But what’s more important is to find a physical activity / movement that you like the experience of and value the benefits off. The main thing is to be consistent. So whether strength work is part of the initial strategy or not is not a big deal. But eventually I would recommend introducing strength work in to your strategy.
