Psalm 139. The 139th Psalm could be considered an extended meditation on the omniscience and the immensity and the infinity of God. This might come as something of a surprise for many of us because it's not altogether clear to us how abstract doctrines touching on the nature of God would hav ..read more

Why is it Hard to Tame our Fingers?
The internet, and especially social media, has changed the world. It has also changed us. Do not think that this is a blanket condemnation of social media. I am on social media, so to call judgment on its use would be condemning myself. Social media has become such a normal part of everyday life; it is simply the air we breathe. Not only is it normal, but it can be used for good purposes. It can be a valuable tool for communication, it allows us to keep up with our friends and loved ones, and some Christians use it to winsomely communicate God’s truth ..read more

Martyn Lloyd-Jones started his medical career with unprecedented promise. Before he turned 22, he was the assistant to the Royal Physician. Whenever the Sovereign of the land needed medical help, the Royal Physician was there to assist, and the one assisting the Royal Physician was none other than a young Martyn Lloyd-Jones. He became a master at diagnosing the human body.
As a doctor, it didn’t take long for Lloyd-Jones to notice his patients getting worse despite his prescriptions. The failure of some treatments was not the fault of his medical expertise. Rather, he realized that medicine fa ..read more

During the Reformation, one of the leading defenders of the Protestant view of the Bible was William Whitaker. In his A Disputation on Holy Scripture, Whitaker went blow-for-blow with the leading Roman Catholic apologists of the day, articulating the view we now know as Sola Scriptura with precision and power. In the following excerpt, Whitaker challenges the Roman Catholic assertion that the authority of Scripture comes from the church:
How should we understand the scriptures’ authority?
As we begin to answer this question, we must return to those words of Christ, which are contained in John ..read more

How much could you tell me about your great-grandparents? It is a humbling reality that just two or three generations removed, very few people will remember much about us. The truth is that while earthly things fade over time, the ripples of godly influence continue.
Despite his fame and success as a missionary and sports star, C. T. Studd wrote this startling refrain: ‘Only one life, 'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last. As believers, we have a very different perspective from the world. We know our God has a perfect plan, and nothing is outside of His design and control ..read more

Brian Cosby:
Well, the topic I've been given is Suffering and Sovereignty, John Flavel and the Puritans on Afflicted Providence. Before we begin, let's open in a quick word of prayer. Heavenly Father, thy word is a lamp unto my feet. And we do thank you for that word, and we do pray your blessing upon us this afternoon as we consider the teaching of your word as exposited, as taught through your servants the Puritans. May we gain a greater desire for our savior who suffered for us, in whose name we pray. Amen.
Amen.
So the history of Christianity is a history of suffering. The history of Chri ..read more

The Saint's Advantage by Christ's Ascension and Coming Again from Heaven by Puritan Christopher Love encourages believers to embrace some of Christ’s most surprising words: “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is expedient for you that I go away. . .” (John 14:7a).
Remember the benefits of having an exalted Savior in this adapted excerpt:
“Why is not enough for us that Christ ascended to heaven spiritually? If His soul is in heaven, why is it so important that His body also was taken up?”

It was necessary for Christ’s bodily prese ..read more

In the first volume of The Christian’s Reasonable Service, Wilhelmus à Brakel explains Christ’s office as King as the Mediator of the Covenant of Grace. Christ’s perfection and fulfillment of these roles has implications that the believer can never ignore:
“The kingly office is the third office of Christ. A king is a person in whom alone the supreme authority over a nation is vested. Thus, the Lord Jesus is King, and none but Him. . .
Since the Lord Jesus is King, one must confess Him as such and not be ashamed of Him. "Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also b ..read more
