Track Review: Monster // Eville

I have never heard of Eville but judging from bands who have come out of their scene, such as HAWXX, Kid Kapichi, UGLY CLUB, and Snayx, they have the potential to rock. Let’s see what their new song “Monster” is like. Fucking god. This crushes my fucking skull. What’s interesting about this production is that vocally it’s drenched in autotune, however everything about it is dark, gothic, and spooky. Have the guitars been put into a bitcrusher? The vocals are bratty and spiky, adding to an intoxicating potion of fierce nu metal. I love this song. I hope that Eville get bigger. They’ve been play ..read more

Track Review: Televangelist // Mutes

Having heard some of Mutes’ other songs like “Mere Slaughter”, they blend rock melodies with catchy pop sensibilities. How will they fare on new song “Televangelist”? We shall see. It’s quite fast, similar to Royal Blood, with gritty vocals and fast guitars. It’s very summery and surf rock like, with a cool little solo at around 1:12. I think it picks up from where they left off, resulting in a solid 2 minute banger. Album Review: BED OF NAILS // Florence Black

Florence Black, with 73K monthly listeners on Spotify, are a rock trio from Wales. My first experience with them was their quieter, more soulful song “Grove Street”, which I listen to on my commute to work. They have an album out which they released earlier in the year called “Bed of Nails”. I was initially very thrown off by the early 00s influenced opening track “Start Again.” But then I listened to it again and that riff has power to it. It adds motivation to your day and gets you started. Even on “DON’T HOLD ME DOWN”, fucking hell that southern rock riff in the middle is so powerful, the g ..read more

Track Review: BITE MY TONGUE // CELAVI

Welsh nu metallers CELAVI are back with a new song, called “BITE MY TONGUE” and it will be interesting to see what it will be like. Will it have the same biting infectious riffs as earlier single “STAIN?” We shall see. The good news is that it is a pretty solid effort. The catchy synths combine well with the bouncy guitars, while the vocals recall Wargasm. The pause before the chorus offers a bit of time to breathe, and then the chorus hits you. I didn’t know that the song was produced by Romesh Dodangoda (Sylosis, Bring Me the Horizon), but that helps bring out the heaviness and chunky riffs ..read more

Album Review: Grief Is No Ally // Mavis

MAVIS are essentially, as their press release states, “four guys from Germany expressing their love for modern metalcore.” Germany has a deep rooted love for all things rock and metal, so it’s no surprise that we have many bands who want to put their stamp on this wonderful genre of music. Metalcore does get stick because most bands sound similar. This leads to a lot of identikit bands. Personally, I’ve been listening to more prog metal, but truth be told, I always get excited about the modern metalcore scene. With bands like Invent Animate, Architects, and Currents satisfying my breakdown cra ..read more

Track Review: Strong Enough // Pollyanna Blue

Strong Enough” is a fantastic song by Pollyanna Blue. Personally I’m a big fan of this Bristolian rock outfit. Their last few songs such as “Saviour” and “Haunted” are so catchy with sickly sweet melodies. I’m pleased to report that “Strong Enough” is more of the same, and that can only be a good thing. From the haunting reverb in the bridge to the stomping guitar and vocals, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The strong vocals recall UGLY CLUB at their fiercest, backed by those massive soaring guitars. What’s more, there’s even some screams too at around the 3:27 mark, showing they real ..read more

Track Review: Dream Reimagined // Milyssa Rose

Milyssa Rose has a versatile sound pallete that includes dance, rock, and hip hop. The rock influences are present in her superb song, “Olly”. Her new song, “Dream Reimagined” is soulful and calming. I think the vocals are beautiful, they have a Shirley Bassey quality to them. while the drums have a jazzy bossa nova feel. This makes the song have a summery vibe, however at the same time this is built for an orchestra, and while there are the occasional trumpets, the instrumentation feels sparse without it. I think the lyrics are about a nightmare, judging by the chorus “if this is a dream, wak ..read more

Album Review: BATS // Gama Bomb

With the sound of an open door comes Gama Bomb’s brand new album. The Irish Thrash metallers wormed their way into my heart back in 2012 when a good friend of mine showed me their album Citizen Brain. So good was this album, that it deserved a re listen, and from there I got into their album The Terror Tapes, which was also class. Earlier this year, they released an album called BATS, which I have thoroughly enjoyed.  The Egyptian influences of “Egyptron” add to this thrash metal twist, as the lyrics speak of an entity known as the Iron Pharoah, who has been mummified and has the power to ..read more

Track Review: Untouchable// Koncept

I am absolutely obsessed with “Untouchable” by Koncept. Koncept has impressed me over the last few years, with a cool as fuck flow that makes you want to relax. On “Untouchable”, there is a triumphant feel to the song.  This is reflected in the confident lyrics: “Move the way I want I’m untouchable and laid back” alongside the trumpets! Wow, this song screams confidence because it makes the listener feel on top of the world. It is smooth, jazzy, and gets you motivated.  I love hearing horns in hip hop. It is the same with some of the recommended songs that come up. This new wave of h ..read more

Track Review: The Vulnerables // Argonaut
Nexus Music Blog

Argonaut is a band who combine the best bits of fuzzy pop and a DIY ethic. This comes across in songs like “Move Fast”, which married sweet angelic vocals with scuzzy spiky guitars that slots in nicely with bands such as Dream Nails and even She Drew The Gun. It’ll be really cool to see what their new song “The Vulnerables” sounds like. I hear it has a Britpop vibe, making me curious. I think “The Vulnerables” has a very sweet vocal line, with an indie pop chorus that inflicts plenty of melody on the listener. It talks about how it’s okay to be vulnerable and wear your heart on your sleeve. It ..read more
