Ready, Set, Prune! How to scratch test plants and how to prune with Garden Guy

Sharpen pruning shears (if needed)
Clean pruning shears- Clean your pruning shears with rubbing alcohol.
Have a wheelbarrow nearby for debris you cut off.

Select a Branch-
Scratch- Gently scratch the outer layer of bark using the clean pruners. You want to expose the underlying tissue.
Look for Green- Pay attention to the color of the tissue beneath the bark. Healthy tissue is typically green. Dead tissue is brown or mushy. Continue do ..read more

Remove these to improve the overall appearance of the plant.
Prune!
Cut at the Base- Trim the dead or unwanted fronds at the base of the plant, near the soil level.

Seven easy steps for your home landscaping

1. Assess Damage- Check for any visible damage to plants.
2. Prune- Prune away dead or damaged branches, but avoid heavy pruning until you see signs of new growth in the spring.
3. Water- Water the landscape if the soil is dry. Hydrated plants are better equipped to recover from freeze damage.
4. Mulch- Apply a layer of mulch around the base of plants to insulate the soil and retain moisture.
