What music is in the Waldorf curriculum? Class 1 In Music Class 1 we use singing games, dancing games, sing-alongs and stories to create music together. We explore physically the steady beat, how the beat relates to rhythm, and how beat and rhythm relate to melody in a naturally organic progression. The material we use incorporates the season we're in as well as aspects of the students’ Main Lesson blocks. Emphasis is on creative expression and musical exploration, where everyone participates together in the creation of beautiful music. Music Notation is introduced in a fun, organic way ..read more

Tragedy and Comedy: This main lesson explores the opposing genres of tragedy and comedy. We will begin with the origins of drama in ancient Greek religious festivals, and follow the themes of self-awareness, transformation, wisdom, foolishness, and human responses to the world around them. Our work will center on two plays: the ancient Greek tragedy of Antigone by Sophocles, and the French comedy The Imaginary Invalid by Molière. This course also helps scaffold strong work habits. We will build skills for reading plays as distinct from reading prose, and discuss how this changes our role ..read more

What is Special About Science in Waldorf High School Classes

A healthy view of the world starts with a healthy view of ourselves. How we view ourselves, our roles and responsibilities affects what we do in this world. And, how we view the world reflects on how we act in it. It is therefore important and more so at this time in our earth's history to see everything in relation to one another. Study of physical, chemical, biological and earth sciences opens us to incredible organization, beauty and precision in nature. In Waldorf education, our approach to science is phenomenological. Students get to experience and not just repeat different phenomena and ..read more

Far away but not long ago, from the misty forests where ancient trees whispered secrets to the wind, arrived two teachers and guides to meet marvelous students in a vast space of their online classroom. Remembering how sunlight paints patterns on the forest floor, and how birds sing their timeless melodies, the two guardians welcomed the students into the space and time devoted to learning and practice of not facts, but things that empower, strengthen, and connect.   The students soon began to realize that each of them is a guide and a guardian and they began to weave the tapestry of th ..read more

COLLABORATIVE SONG COMPOSITION IN A REMOTE DIGITAL SETTING   As Seasons of Seven's music teacher, I have the pleasure of encountering students from all over the place geographically, and at all sorts of skill/experience levels musically. In the lower grades we focus on basics of steady beat, how beat relates to rhythm, how those together relate to melody, and how we translate those concepts to instruments like recorder and ukulele. All in an approach that's centered on experiential over intellectual, process over product. We have fun making music together, and the technical aspects of the ..read more

Eurythmy Peter Stories in Grade 1

I absolutely love all things eurythmy. I love the way it connects to the beautiful world around us. One way we relate this in classes, specifically in the younger grades, is by teaching eurythmy gestures with stories. One of my favorite things to teach, is the Peter Stories in first grade. The children love the story because it is so relatable to the things they know and understand. On a deeper level, it shows the relationship between the human and animal worlds, showing the place of each on this earth. The story follows animals being animals and humans being human, but what happens when we in ..read more
