Last week, I shared a video titled, “Why WillPower + Self Control Will Not Help You Lose Weight” and while it seemed to resonate with most of you, I did have a handful of people who were really confused by this suggestion.  So I wanted to pop in to clear up the way I see this. My definition of willpower and self control is when we believe there is an external plan, diet, or eating approach that is the right way to eat and all we have to do is have the will and the self control to follow the rules and then we will be good. When believe the plan is over there, it invites us to disconnect w ..read more

Contrary to popular belief, more willpower and more self restraint are not the answer to weight loss.  As matter of fact, I would argue that they actually contribute to the endless diet-binge cycle that so many of us have struggled with at one point or another in our lives. Here’s the thing. When we attach ourselves to a specific way of eating, or to a specific diet, and then hold judgment around that way of eating, we inevitably set ourselves up for failure. For example, if you believe eating low carb is good,  then you also believe that when you eat low carb you’re being good. And ..read more

As most of you already know, I really struggled with my weight any body image for many years. I would say the thick of it started when I was around 12 or 13 years old and then continued to be a constant struggle until I was about 30’s (and just to put that into perspective, I am currently 41). The funny thing is that my struggle with weight and body image is what lead me to do what I do today, so in many ways, I’m super grateful for the journey.  Had I not wanted to lose weight, I would have never gone on to study fitness, integrative nutrition, weight loss, or food psychology. So needle ..read more

Watch the video HERE! Here’s what the equation looks like for a perfectionist: Set a goal Make a plan Execute plan Go off the plan (in other words – NOT be perfect) Kick yourself, beat yourself up, feel badly Never get back on the plan because you are exhausted from all the emotional beatings (this is the part where you tell yourself you don’t really care – but you do, your just tired Clearly, this does not and will not work. Here’s the same equation minus the perfectionism: Set a goal Make a plan Execute plan Go off the plan (in other words – NOT be perfect) Observe, adjust, extend love a ..read more

WATCH THE VIDEO HERE. This article was originally published in 2008.  I recently added a video, so I am sharing with you again. Many people (including myself) turn to food for a variety of reasons other than the simple state of hunger.  We turn to food when it’s time to celebrate just as we turn to food when we are feeling down.  We turn to food to ease us through an uncomfortable moment and often times as an attempt to escape the uncomfortable moment (which doesn’t work because as soon as we’re done eating, the discomfort is still there patiently awaiting our return).  We ..read more

Scroll down to watch the video. When I was at the peak of my struggle with my weight, I remember thinking that if someone else could just tell me exactly what to do and eat I would finally be able to figure out how to lose the extra weight once and for all.  It was that very thought that had me jumping from one diet plan to the next on a weekly basis.  I was convinced that the answer was ‘out there’ and that belief left me in a constant state of disconnection with myself and my body. While nutritional plans and diets can be super useful, we have to remember to use them as ..read more

5 Steps To Achieve Heath + Weight Loss Goals Happy New Year! This is the time of year when health, fitness, and weight loss goals are taking front stage, and for good reason!  Many of us (ok,  perhaps I should just speak for myself) have played, celebrated, indulged, over-indulged, stayed up late and let it all go over the past two weeks and nothing sounds better then refocusing on our goals. So I wanted to kick off the year talking about what goes into to creating and achieving goals for the long run.  This is a topic that really interest me.  I love learning about what we ..read more
