Tip #473 from IT Managers in Perth: When you hang around too long in a role and ‘what you know’ starts to stagnate, then it’s time for ‘who you know’ to come to the rescue. Had a coffee with a great candidate who’s IT journey basically went something like this: Accountant role – got bored, did a career change and moved into an IT company because someone he knew could vouch for his intelligence and work ethic. 7 years later he was still there and bored, moved to a different IT company for a while and then through a good friend got offered an IT Manager role at another company. He stayed there t ..read more

The Longevity Dilemma: The Perception Mismatch Between Candidates and Employers in the Tech Industry

Here’s something I’ve noticed multiple times recently. A mismatch between what a candidate perceives as long term versus how an employer sees it. A candidate said in an interview that they want their next move to be long term, at least 2 years. The employer had a much longer term in mind. I know there’s a big debate around job hopping and how important tenure is to potential employers. On one side, I’ve seen young, very smart and highly skilled people move quickly between jobs. Simply put they move on once they’re no longer challenged and have little more to learn in that environment. Being up ..read more

IT Management Career Progression Takeaways from Someone Who Immigrated from Pakistan

I’m enjoying a circuit of coffee catch ups with IT Managers around town at the moment and chatting through their career progression. I’m having some fascinating chats and learning a lot, some of which I’ll share here. The latest one was with a software dev who immigrated from Pakistan over 10 years ago and is still at that same company having worked his way up the ranks now to IT Manager. The key takeaways for me in terms of career progression were: Getting the first job can be hard It’s hard as an immigrant to get that first job. But because he was willing to relocate anywhere in Aus and do a ..read more

Unveiling the Challenges: Tales from IT Managers in the Cloud Era

I’ve been drinking lots of coffee lately (nothing new there) and conversing with IT Managers about their career and what issues they face currently as an IT manager. I’ll be bringing you some of their stories here, as I know it’s helpful for a lot of my community to know what it takes to move into IT management from technical roles. Plenty of the IT Manager’s are in charge of 50 – 500 seat environments that engage MSP’s for some or all of their support requirements. Here’s what’s interesting… Some are entirely public cloud environments. No servers on prem and mostly they’re using SAAS based M3 ..read more

Finding an IT Manager Role Can Be Difficult

You’ve got a whole lot of tech people who’ve been working for 10 years looking to advance into management. You’ve got a whole lot of IT management people wanting to move on from their current role even if just for a change of environment. A lot of these will already have 10 years or more management experience. This makes for a crowded market for management roles while advanced or technical specialist roles are very hard to fill. I spoke to an IT Manager last week who had been in management roles for the last 25 years or so. I was probing him as to how he advanced through his career (he’s now t ..read more

BDM’s for MSPs… it’s a vexed subject for me

Usually when a small business MSP asks me to find them one, I push back and start asking them why, and get detailed in asking questions around their lead generation process and what they expect the BDM to do… if it’s everything from opening doors, lead generation, lead qualifying, solution design, proposal development and presentation, closing the deal and then doing ongoing Account Management, then usually I suggest a rethink of the role and/or their sales process. Having said that, I know it’s hard, as a small business owner, to effectively replace yourself in that sales role.. also where do ..read more

Why Do Happy Employees Still Consider Other Opportunities?
Transparency Blog
by Daniel Linden

Why do employees who are happy in their role still consider other job opportunities when presented to them? Not because we recruiters have super human powers of persuasion. Believe me we’re nothing to be scared of in that department. The key reason passive candidates (aka happy employees) will look at other roles is if they feel there’s a greater opportunity for advancement with another employer. I know, they tell me this all the time, particularly in an employee friendly market. What does your next role look like with your current employer? Is the path forward clear? If you’re an IT Manager d ..read more
