This summer the Colorado Center for the blind will again offer its No Limits to Learning program for blind teens. In addition to the 4-week program we offered in 2023, we will also offer a 7-week program that will include attending the National Federation of the Blind convention in Orlando. We believe blind people can do anything. Every day, we encourage and challenge each student—and they come to understand their potential as they build the skills and confidence to live the life they want. Because when you believe in yourself and experience a thriving community of positive blind people, noth ..read more

(Editor’s Note:  Executive Director Julie Deden sent The letter below to the 117 donors to the Colorado Center for the Blind on Colorado Gives Day. That number doesn’t count the twenty or so students, staff, and especially seniors who contributed cash totaling $284. Nor would it include all of our supporters who give in ways that are not monetary. These of course include our volunteers, board members, and many other members in our Littleton community and National Federation of the Blind community whose support we cannot overvalue! So, as 2023 winds to its end and we prepare to hit the ..read more

A Long Way in a Short Time – Support Us on Colorado Gives Day!
Colorado Center For The Blind Blog

When Fitz came to the center as a student, he really didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life, simply because he had no idea what he could do. As an Independence Training Program (ITP) student, Fitz has been finding his own identity as a blind person. With what he thought of as a lot of residual vision, Fitz nonetheless was one, like many of us, caught in between the myth that blindness means absolute “blackness” and the hard reality of being stuck because we can’t actually see enough, and we don’t have the skills that many totally blind people use effortlessly every day.… Read the rest ..read more

Colorado Center For The Blind Blog

Giving back is meaningful. Here, Rose and Aaron unpack a newly-delivered box at the food bank. D carries a box, while IFCS staffer Tara brings over a cart stacked with cartons. Eliza and Greg shelve items from the cart for later distribution. Our students and staff volunteer once a month at nearby IFCS, and every month a different group makes the trip. Yes, every December we ask for your support for our programs that teach innovative and challenging blindness skills, imbue our students with a belief in themselves as blind people, and build the confidence to pursue their dreams. Bella reads the accessible Braille sign at the 2023 Shared Visions exhibit. We know that blind people can do anything, and that includes creating and enjoying art. It just needs to be tactilely accessible to us. Since 2014, we’ve partnered with Arapahoe Community Colloege’s Dept. of Art and Design in an art show that does just that. It’s the entire Colorado Gallery of the Arts filled with art pieces that not only permit, but require that you put your hands on them! All are made by ACC students or CCB students and staff. Fitz reaches out to touch one of the stars at Shared Visions 2023. … Read ..read more

Michelle runs the sound board for the NFB of Denver Chapter meeting. Editor’s Note: As we do each year, staff and students at the Colorado Center for the Blind attended the National Federation of the Blind convention during the first week of July. Forty of us traveled to Houston where we joined over 2300 fellow members of the NFB at the Hilton Americas for six days of meetings, networking, presentations, and NFB business such as resolutions, a great exhibit hall with the best in blindness-related assistive technology and other products. There were division meetings and state caucuses, recepti ..read more

Coding Success with Project Access

It may have been the worst speech synthesis since, well, the VoTrax (circa 1987), but it sounded beautiful because this room full of blind students had coded their BBC Microbits themselves to produce that “Hello!” It was all part of our two-day camp with Cyber.org’s Project Access on coding/robotics here at the Colorado Center for the Blind. We had ten participants – a mix of middle and high school students and our younger Independence Training Program (ITP) students. Cyber.org provides coding and robotics training to youth across the U.S. to promote interest in cyber security careers. Cyber ..read more
