Today Four Wheel Campers announced a host of substantial upgrades and options for their popular line of off-road truck campers. We’re on our second Four Wheel Camper - the Hawk UTE flatbed - which we’ve had for almost three years. Our first FWC was a slide-in Raven model, which we used for over a year before upgrading to the Hawk UTE. In this post I’ll cover each one of the new options and offer my thoughts on whether they are must-haves ro just nice to haves. I’ll also share a few changes I hope to see Four Wheel Campers embrace at some point…hopefully in the near future. Let’s dive in. Stan ..read more

Should You Upgrade Your Overland Camper or Van to a Lithium Power System?

Overland camper equipped with Four Wheel Campers Hawk UTE and Battleborn Batteries at campsite near Moab, Utah. Over the last twenty years my wife and I have had travel trailers big and small, two motor homes, and two overland rigs, both of which were built using Four Wheel Campers as the habitat. All of these RV’s utilized AGM batteries as part of the integrated power system. At best, the AGM systems are…just okay. Twenty years ago, the only way to add power was to add more batteries, and with space at a premium this often wasn’t possible. Fast forward to today, and we now have the option of ..read more

Gear Review: Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD Lens

I’ll be honest – I didn’t have high expectations when I plunked down $650 for the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens for use on my Sony A7IV. I just needed a relatively compact, affordable lens with a wide range of focal lengths that would be easy to travel with on commercial flights. There weren’t many lenses in the running and I settled on the Tamron because it was readily available and within my budget. I bought mine where I buy almost all of my camera gear, from the fantastic team at Pictureline in Salt Lake City. Not long ago, superzoom lenses were an exercise in compromise; what ..read more

Behind the Image: Wildflowers in American Basin, Colorado

A wildflower garden of columbines, indian paintbrush, harebells and more bloom in verdant American Basin outside Lake City, Colorado. American Basin. The name alone brings joy to the hearts of landscape photographers, especially those of us living in the American West. It’s the kind of place that’s being loved to death these days, for a variety of reasons, and the last time we were there it had lost much of its charm. RZR’s were parked all over the meadows, the flowers were being trampled by wannabe IG influencers and one had to watch one’s step to avoid piles of human excrement. Back in 2011 ..read more

Behind the Image: Sunset Light on Second Wave

A warm winter sunset splashes light on the Second Wave in the Coyote Buttes region of the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, Arizona…or Utah? When a friend calls you with news that he has a permit to hike into the Wave, and then invites you to join him on that hike, you do whatever you need to do to make it happen. Such was the case in early 2009, when my buddy Jim Talaric invited me to join him and a couple other photographers on a short trip throughout the Page area. My wife was very pregnant, but she was also very understanding, and encouraged me to join the guys on what would be a whirl ..read more

2022 Zion National Park Fall Color Update

A riot of colorful foliage lines a muddy creekbed in one of many side canyons of Zion National Park, Utah. Earlier this week I was thankful to have a half day to dedicate to photography in Zion National Park. I was hoping to find some colorful leaves but on the drive in from La Verkin, passing cottonwoods along the Virgin River, disappointment began to set in. Almost all of the trees were still green, with only a few barely starting to show signs of yellow in their leaves. I knew the east side of Zion was at higher elevation, so even if the canyon wasn’t popping off there was a chance I’d fin ..read more

Heads on a Swivel, Photographers - A Tip from Arizona Highways

Early in my photography career – probably somewhere around the year 2000 – I purchased a nature photography book published by Arizona Highways. As a budding photographer, the images in the magazine provided limitless inspiration. I wanted to create similar images, so it came as no surprise when one of the first “how-to” books I ever bought was published by them. In the years that followed my collection of books would eventually grow to include titles produced by many of the best nature photographers of the era; John Shaw, Art Wolfe, and Galen Rowell – to name just a few. All were excellent, a ..read more
