When I look back to how my love affair with music started, I can thank my Irish grandparents for igniting the spark. They’d visit every other weekend and give me sixpence to sing while grandma played the fiddle and grandad the melodeon. My six year old self thought it was a great way to make money. Later, when my dad was stationed in the RAF in Egypt and Africa in the fifties, he brought back a collection of LPs. The Song Book, recently launched by Shared Harmonies CIC, contains a set of songs in different languages and guidance on how they might be used in singing groups for people living with dementia . They also produced a Practitioner Guide for people who are thinking of starting singing for dementia groups. Singing legend Tony Christie has joined with Music for Dementia to launch Thank You Day 2023, taking place on Sunday 2 July. And we want you to be part of it. Grace Meadows has been with The Utley Foundation for almost five years, during which time she oversaw the establishment and development of the Music for Dementia campaign, creating real momentum and action around the power of music for people living with dementia and making it an integral part of care. Vera is an intuitive app that analyses the age of the person living with dementia, where they grew up, and how they react to certain music.
