On December 19, 2023 the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) released its long-awaited final guidance on registered charities making grants to non-qualified donees. The guidance has significant implications for Canadian philanthropy, and will affect how both funders and foundations will be able to support non-qualified donees outside Canada in an alternative to the ‘own activities’ model that was previously the only way to fund global programs.

The Budget Implementation Act No. 1 (Amended 2022) (the Act), which governs the Canadian national budget and associated matters, was given royal assent on June 23, 2022. Charities across Canada should take note of specific sections included in Part 16 of the Act that expand the types of disbursements exempt entities can make to advance their charitable purposes.

Founded in 1986, Farm Sanctuary, has spent decades fighting to bring farm animal welfare into the mainstream consciousness of Americans. In its eighth COVID-19 survey conducted in August 2021, CAF America polled 436 charitable organizations operating in 5 countries to report on their current status and outlook for the future.
Key Findings Include
Smaller charities are more fragile. Small charities (with 1-5 employees) are 57% more likely to say they are struggling than larger organizations.
