PHOTOS BY PREP SOLUTIONS When stepping through the front door of 140 Bigham Street on Mount Washington, a few details stand out immediately; century-old leaded glass and intricate millwork honor the age of the grand home, while funky fixtures, a custom cut-glass railing and a high-contrast, black-and-white paint job firmly bring the house into the 21st century.  That juxtaposition was intentional, says owner David Allen of Building Greatness LLC. “This renovation project was carefully planned to transform the space into modern living with respect to the home’s heritage,” he says. “We s ..read more

Movie Review: Boy Kills World
Pittsburgh Magazine

PHOTO COURTESY ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS The gleefully violent action comedy “Boy Kills World” succeeds by refracting the “Hunger Games” formula through a funhouse mirror. The trappings of that series and its imitators — the greedy, totalitarian regime, the desperate resistance, the gamified public executions — are all here. Somehow, though, they’re funny while also being almost stunningly violent. Should it work? Probably not. Does it? Absolutely. As a child, Boy’s (Bill Skarsgård) family was publicly executed by the despotic Hilda van der Koy (Famke Janssen) as part of an annual celebration du ..read more

Time for Reflection — and a Look Forward

PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK I vividly remember standing in a long line at 5 a.m. on May 14, 1994 to get into the new Warhol museum. Fireworks had lit up the sky at midnight, when the $12 million eclectic space on the North Shore opened to the public; curious throngs poured in over the next 24 hours. My other memory from that visit was the thrill of pushing around those floating Silver Clouds on the Fifth Floor. The Warhol celebrates its 30th anniversary this month, as one of the major attractions that draws people to the Steel City from around the world. It’s just one of the important anniversary s ..read more

Why Good Dental Hygiene Is Important Beyond Your Teeth
Pittsburgh Magazine

PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK Taking care of your teeth can do more than prevent cavities.  According to Dr. Martinna Bertolini, an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and more have been linked to dental health. The same bacteria that causes problems in oral cavities, and are typically only found in oral cavities, have been shown to cause inflammation in other areas of the body, Bertolini says. “We know some patients, they can tend to have these bacteria traveling from the mouth to the distant organs in the body,” she says ..read more

THE NEW FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY AT PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. | PHOTO COURTESY TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION When I was flying out of Boston Logan International Airport recently, the TSA agent asked me to slide over to the left slightly after I handed him my driver’s license at the security checkpoint. “Just stand there and look at the camera,” he said.  It took a second. He verified a match and let me move on. Now that facial recognition technology has arrived at Pittsburgh International Airport.
