The program will serve three years on probation, a fine and recruiting restrictions consistent with the Level-I violations levied against it as penalties for the violations.  The NCAA announced these penalties are in accordance with an agreement with Michigan and five individuals that currently work or previously worked for the program. Using lessons from Mike Sainristil, Semaj Morgan looking to lead by example in young receiver room
The Michigan Daily » Football
by Lys Goldman

Semaj Morgan might only be a sophomore, but he’s the elder statesman in the Michigan football team’s wide receiver room this year. Behind former receivers Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson, Morgan took on a substantial role in the Wolverines’ offense and special teams last season. He appeared in every game at wide receiver and all but one as a kick or punt returner, notching 204 receiving yards and four total touchdowns. The then-freshman burst onto the scene early, and his role only grew as the season progressed. This upcoming fall, though, Wilson and Johnson won’t be around anymore. Morgan ..read more

‘Duck’: Tony Alford adjusting to other side of Michigan-Ohio State rivalry
The Michigan Daily » Football

When new running backs coach Tony Alford first decided to jump to the Michigan football team after nine years with Ohio State, plenty of thoughts likely swirled around his mind. How the opportunity could help him and his career. What he can bring to the Wolverines. What it would be like to be on the other side of The Game come November.  But above any of those other thoughts, a more urgent message of what he had to do first permeated through:  “Duck,” Alford joked Wednesday.  Alford was being facetious, but it reflects the ire that switching sides in one of the most ferocious r ..read more

T.J. Guy knows he’s shown flashes of his abilities throughout his first three seasons with the Michigan football team. He also knows he’s followed up those moments with mediocre or even bad plays. Ahead of his senior year, expectations of a breakout season are swirling around the edge rusher. And in preparation to meet those expectations, Guy emphasized the area of his game that he believes has grown the most: his consistency. When teammates have commented on who they’ve seen stepping up recently, Guy’s name is often one of the first out of their mouths. The Wolverines have seen Guy’s growth ..read more

With Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant at the center, Michigan defensive line primed for more in 2024
The Michigan Daily » Football

The Michigan football team’s defensive line is already causing problems. Throughout one of the most “competitive and challenging” spring practices of graduate running back Kalel Mullings’ time in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines’ defense — and their defensive line in particular — has been consistently challenging their offense. “The defense, they’re definitely throwing some things at us right now,” Mullings said Thursday. “But at the same time, the great thing about it is that we’re all getting better. We’re testing them and they’re testing us every single day.” With standout returners in junior def ..read more

The Michigan football team’s recently hired defensive line coach might be new to the Wolverines’ program, but he’s no stranger to its home state. On Friday, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore officially hired Lou Esposito as the Wolverines’ new defensive line coach. Esposito fills the spot that Greg Scruggs left, following Scruggs’ resignation after allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated. “I am excited to welcome Lou to our Michigan Football family and look forward to having his leadership and experience directing our defensive linemen,” Moore said in a statement. “Lou is a great defensiv ..read more

Michigan building toward adjusted offensive identity with new personnel
The Michigan Daily » Football

When the Michigan football team takes its first snap this fall, its offense will be almost unrecognizable from just a year ago. There will be a new face under center, five new starters on the offensive line, new contributors in the running back room and multiple new pass catchers. Even the sidelines will see plenty of change, with a new running backs coach, a new offensive line coach, a new tight ends coach, a new offensive coordinator and a new head coach. Granted, many of the “new” faces are familiar ones taking on bigger roles. Four of the five quarterbacks battling for the starting spot h ..read more

Michigan’s defense striving to exceed high standard set last season
The Michigan Daily » Football

At the top of a mountain, it may seem like the only way to go is down. But the Michigan football team’s defense believes that another, higher peak is emerging from the clouds — and the Wolverines want to climb it. In 2023, Michigan’s defense ranked No. 1 nationally in total defense and scoring defense. It also led the team to a national championship, so it’s hard to dispute that it was the best in the country. Improving on the best is a nearly impossible task, made even more difficult by the Wolverines losing nine high-end defensive contributors. Despite the turnover and steep climb ahea ..read more

Fire back in his heart, Donovan Edwards is ready to take Michigan with him
The Michigan Daily » Football
by Noah Kingsley

This time last year, Donovan Edwards wasn’t feeling his best.  He’d had knee surgery in February, which restricted his participation in spring ball with the rest of the Michigan football team. Edwards was losing his love for the game, and he didn’t get the chance to find his groove again with the pressure off. It set him back, and as he worked through his recovery, he never fully found his footing. But one season later and with spring ball looming again, the senior running back is feeling better than ever.  “I’ve always had this fire in my heart,” Edwards said Monday. “… And I’ll be ..read more
