Algoma From The Air: Fly-in Bass Fishing

This Fish’n Canada episode was by far Pete’s most anticipated, “I can’t wait for it” trip of the year. No, it wasn’t about humongous, heavy current white sturgeon, it wasn’t about giant fly-in pike and lake trout, it wasn’t a shot at a late fall massive Striper, and it wasn’t a crack at a 1000-pound tuna. Believe it or not, it was about a tiny little Bass Lake that’s kinda hard to get to. Since largemouth and smallmouth bass are Pete’s absolute favourite fish to target… this was the perfect trip for him! The Location Joining Pete were Steve Niedzwiecki, Dean Taylor (drone pilot), and Vova Ba ..read more

Do you really have to fly in to experience world-class fishing for bass, walleye, giant northern pike or trophy trout? Absolutely not. Fly-in fishing adventures are true bucket list experiences that should be enjoyed at least once in a lifetime. But a lot of those social media posts with folks holding huge fish caught across Northern Ontario are usually from drive-in locations to angling lodge operators with their own boats or the boats supplied by the operator. Fish Species Some of the finest smallmouth bass and walleye trips we have personally experienced are from locations where we towed ..read more

I get asked by a lot of people which ‘exact’ locations should they consider based on my own personal experiences fishing in Ontario’s Algoma Country for either smallmouth bass or walleye. This is not an easy question to answer because we have been blessed to be able to fish so many different lakes and river systems across this region but certain trips stand out either because of excellent timing or memorable fish catches. Based on the aforementioned, here are my ‘Fab 4 Fishing’ destinations for those planning an angling vacation this year. 1. Trophy Smallmouth Bass The unique world-class all ..read more

Bass Fishing Wakomata Lake

Although the frequency of my visits to beautiful Algoma Country has diminished since COVID-19, I have been fortunate enough to continue with an annual trip to one of the many great resorts the area has to offer. This fall, the destination would be north of Thessalon at Snowshoe Camp Resort on beautiful Lake Wakomata. My son Izaak and I spent several days exploring that massive lake in mid-September and enjoying the fine hospitality and amenities that Snowshoe has to offer. After a seven-hour scenic drive up to the resort, we didn’t have much daylight left for fishing but did get our Snowshoe ..read more

For many anglers, including myself, there is no joy greater than catching smallmouth bass on a fly. From poppers to streamers, the smallmouth bass is loved because they are aggressive and explosive fighters. But finding smallmouth bass in quantity and of trophy-size, that is a challenge. Many anglers living and fishing in urban areas have trouble finding access to good quality bass fishing without crowds, but there is a solution, and it is a drive-to destination. Algoma Country! This centrally located region of Northern Ontario possesses exceptional fishing for big smallmouth bass and it is a ..read more

Algoma Country in Northern Ontario is the perfect place to step out of your comfort zone and experience a remote, DIY fly fishing adventure.  With hundreds of lakes, rivers, and streams to explore, anglers have the opportunity to access secluded, remote and pristine bodies of water teeming with multi-species fish – some of the giant proportions. What is a Remote DIY? Outfitters have realized the desire by fly anglers to get out, to get away from it all and to experience fishing that is wild and unpressured. DIY outpost camps allow for all that and more. For most adventures, anglers are ..read more

Algoma Walleye on the Fly

Algoma Country in northern Ontario is blessed to have hundreds upon hundreds…nay multiple thousands of lakes accessible by plane, train and automobile. The wonderful thing about almost every single one of these lakes is they have a multitude of species one can target on the fly including one of our favourites (to catch and eat) the Walleye! Catching walleye on the fly is thought by many anglers to be, how can I put this delicately … boring! Sitting around waiting for a bite, not much to it. Right? Wrong. There must be a reason it’s one of North America’s favourite fish to target.  In Al ..read more

Allure of the Splake
Algoma Country » Fishing

There are many reasons to drill a hole in the ice in Algoma Country. As I stand on a midsized inland lake, where pine and cedar grip a rocky shoreline that plunges steeply through the lake’s icy surface, it’s clear that the dramatic snow-clad landscape is one of them. Other reasons dwell beneath the frozen surface where an aggressively jigged spoon elicits a savage strike. The battle is defined by solid headshakes and a series of brief searing runs, but fortune is on my side as I guide a shapely trout to the surface. James Smedley holds a decent splake. They grow fast like a brook trout and ..read more
