I was fortunate to be able to join some fellow aspiring Mycologists in the garden and learn more about the fascinating world of fungi. Katie from Fungal Focus Utah was inspiring with her depth of knowledge and friendly personality. Our intimate group of community members listened, asked questions and then assembled our easy to use grow kits, cultivated by Katie. The weather and the garden created the perfect setting. Due to the presents of COVID-19 in our community Summit Community Gardens will follow the CDC and Summit County Health Department recommended guidelines. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see up to date information concerning class cancellations. As of now we will be canceling our composting class, for now all other classes will continue as scheduled. With the warm weather and light rains, we were pleasantly surprised that it was time to harvest from the demonstration gardens.  Arugula and radishes planted in April are ready!  Did you know that different types of plant have specific harvesting procedures?    Salad Greens/Tender Greens Stand over the bed and work backward as you harvest. The tote that you harvest into, will sit on the bed where you have just harvested. Start about two feet in from one end of the bed. Demonstration beds are usually covered with black plastic tarps for at least two weeks prior to planting. This warms the soil, dries it, and kills small weeds to create a clean, dry seedbed.  All the beds located within the demonstration garden have been tilled when the garden was built. We have since been practicing no tillage/low tillage practice in the demonstration garden.
