It’s great to be back outside in the fresh air and bird song at the garden. This March the goldfinches were spotted having a field day despite the soggy weather. Community gardeners old and new are getting their beds ready and early plantings in for a jump on the growing season. Our recently awards Community Beds Project is off to a new start as well. We have rotated to a different bed than last year to grow spuds and add some red onions as companions. We will soon plant mangtout which does well in cool conditions. What is growing this March in our garden? Direct sowing of: Seed onions (small ..read more

A strength of our membership and our garden is our willingness for community partnership. Last year, in collaboration with Shoreline Leisure Greystones, we planted three beautiful beds in our garden to grow organic vegetables for donation to those in need. The Community Beds Project, as we call it, is a way for us to give back and reach out beyond our fences to help those in need. It was inspired by a similar effort from the USA called Earth’s Table. We are proud to have struck up a positive partnership in 2022 with the Bray-based homeless and disadvantaged charity W.H Five Loaves, which opera ..read more

The way we do things… adding raised beds means welcoming new members from our backlogged waitlist and for us, it is such a shame to see people wait for such an amazing, sustaining, and health-giving community amenity. The Greystones & Kilcoole Community Garden covers a relatively tiny 0.12 acres (0.05ha) of Council property. The garden was founded over a decade ago. Due to our recent (beginning in 2019) reopening and renovation of the garden we now have 24 raised beds in service, each assigned to a different membership. Our waitlist contains over 25 people seeking a way to grow their own v ..read more

Hello gardeners. It was another glorious yet challenging year for both community and gardening. With Covid raging through our second season since reopening, we found ourselves grateful for this lush space and the health and sanity we drew from it. We currently have a very full waitlist which really breaks our hearts as we know there is a massive shortage of community gardens and allotments in our area. This past year we managed to build up our 1000 L IBC water tank system and with the help of local farmer/mechanic Robert K. we have been able to get that filled as we struggled to keep everythin ..read more

Oh, 2020. You frightening beauty. A difficult year in so many counts and ways. Despite Covid lockdowns and pandemics, the garden managed to have its “grand reopening” with a full membership. The garden construction works completed a massive renovation of the garden in early February 2020. This was fortuitous since once Covid lockdown struck in late March we had tied the major loose ends on the project up and members who lived within 2km of the garden could still plant and tend their veg ..read more

We have finally finished the construction of 24 new raised beds. Each bed is filled with certified organic compost from mulch.ie. Special thanks goes out to Greystones TidyTowns for bringing in some brawn to complete the heavy manual labour. While the garden is now officially opened we do still have work to do. Next up is the construction of our new composting area and the installation of our water storage system. The post Construction Complete. Over the past few days, volunteers have constructed 15 raised beds with more to come. Next steps we will have organic composts delivered and then fill each of the raised beds. That will get us situated for our official opening on March 1st. We decided to make all of the paths between beds 3 feet (about a metre) wide. this allows for more comfortable growing and maintenance. It also permits better access with wheelbarrows and even wheelchairs. Join up as a member soon so you can get your own raised bed to plant and harvest this year!
