Junior forward Christina Vote (22) works in front of the Holy Cross net during the first period of the Opening Round game at Walter Brown Arena. Down a goal in the final minutes of Tuesday’s opening round game of the Hockey East tournament, the Terriers put up their strongest sequence of the night.  A flurry of shots rained down on Holy Cross senior goaltender Madison Beck in a three-minute sequence as BU desperately tried to tie the win-or-go-home contest.  Amid their extended time in the offensive zone, the Crusaders poked away the puck and tried for a breakaway towards BU’s net. Photo by Cristina Romano. The Boston University women’s hockey team will host the Holy Cross Crusaders on Wednesday evening for the opening round of the Hockey East Tournament.  The Crusaders (7-23-3, 4-20-3 HE) hold the regular season edge over the Terriers (14-17-3, 12-14-1 HE) with two wins in the teams’ weekend series in late January to BU’s single win in mid-December. The weekend series marked Holy Cross’s first win since Nov. 28.  The Crusaders haven’t won since the weekend sweep.  BU faces an uphill battle, despite being the better team on paper. The Terriers are the only ..read more

Photo by Cristina Romano. After nearly every skater had left the ice following BU’s 4-0 loss to UConn Friday night, graduate defender Nadia Mattivi skated around, taking in the last few moments on her team’s senior night.  Despite the outcome of the game, the senior class is still grateful for the opportunity they had to celebrate all their work over the last four years.  “It’s so special playing at Walter Brown, playing with these people,” senior forward and Terrier captain Madison Cardaci said following Friday’s game. “I think it was just a really special night, and we enjoyed it e ..read more

Photo by Cristina Romano. The Boston University women’s hockey team will look to continue its plentiful offense this weekend as it wraps up the regular season in a home-and-home against No. 11 University of Connecticut. Friday’s game at Walter Brown Arena will celebrate BU’s six seniors and two graduate students. The Terriers (14-15-3, 12-12-1 Hockey East) are riding a two-game win streak, with victories over the University of Vermont and Merrimack College last weekend. BU scored four goals in both games, but the team faces a tough competitor in UConn (20-7-5, 17-4-4 HE), who’s allowed just 28 ..read more

The Boston University  women’s ice hockey team got back into the win column with a pair of away victories this weekend. The Terriers beat the University of Vermont 4-1 on Friday and then traveled to Merrimack College on Saturday, winning 4-0 in North Andover.  “Really happy with our group. Our goal was to get two gutsy road wins this weekend, and they did just that,” head coach Tara Watchorn said following the 4-0 win over Merrimack on Saturday. “What I loved is that both games looked a little different, but we found a way to win.” On Friday, the Catamounts scored the first goal mid ..read more

Photo by Cristina Romano. “Do we want this feeling to be our destination or do we want this to be the regular for how we feel?” Head coach Tara Watchorn said this after the Boston University women’s hockey team’s game against Vermont on Jan. 20. The Terriers had just completed a sweep of the Catamounts to stack on top of their Beanpot semifinals win over Boston College.  After the Vermont game, Watchorn’s words were a galvanizing force for an up-and-down team seemingly turning the corner. Since then, the words have been a sobering reminder of recent shortcomings. Since defeating the Catam ..read more

Photo by Cristina Romano. The Boston University women’s ice hockey team fell to the Maine Black Bears 3-1 on Friday night after a slow start. The Terriers (12-15-3, 10-12-1 Hockey East) fell back into old habits, scoring only one goal after a 3-0 shutout of Boston College in their previous matchup. “It was a very slow start for us,” head coach Tara Watchorn said postgame. “That’s not the team that we are, and we’ll try to rebound from that.” The Black Bears (12-16-2, 8-13-2 HE) — riding a seven-game winless streak — maintained consistent pressure on the Terriers and found their game early with ..read more

Photo by Cristina Romano. The Boston University women’s hockey team is set to face off against the University of Maine Black Bears in a Friday night Hockey East matchup at Walter Brown Arena. The game comes after the Terriers split last weekend’s Battle of Comm Ave series against No. 15 Boston College, losing 3-0 Friday night on home ice and winning 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Conte Forum.  That jekyll and hyde performance for BU typifies its performance thus far this season, an up and down one where it’s hard to foresee which version of the team you’ll see from night to night.  Saturd ..read more

Photo by Cristina Romano. Two minutes remained in the contest. Boston College was in a three-goal deficit, and the Eagles were looking to get anything started on offense.  BC sophomore Cailin Flynn skated into the slot and fired off a shot that BU junior goaltender Callie Shanahan deflected. The loose puck sat to Shanahan’s left with sophomore Kate Ham driving in.  Shanahan understood the stakes, and she was ready to do anything to preserve them. The junior netminder threw her entire body on the puck, clearing it away.  “Amazing, timely saves,” BU head coach Tara Watchorn said p ..read more

Photo by Cristina Romano. Boston University’s offensive struggles continued in Friday’s 3-0 loss against a familiar foe — No. 15 Boston College (14-8-6, 13-4-4 Hockey East). The shutout marks the first scoreless game for the Terriers (14-8-6, 13-4-4 HE) since their 2-0 loss to Northeastern University on Oct. 7.  Despite the score — as two Eagle goals came in the final four minutes of play — the Terriers maintained relatively consistent pressure on sophomore goaltender Grace Campbell, but could never find a way to get the puck in the back of the net.  The first period was pretty evenl ..read more
