Read previous – SASAMI @ PhilaMOCA Singaporean songwriter, producer, and singer yeule performed at Union Transfer in Philly on Saturday, October 14th in support of their latest LP softscars, along with opener SASAMI. Compared to their breakout sophomore LP Glitch Princess, yeule’s brand of glitchy dream pop on softscars is more immediate and accessible with its ’90s indie/alternative rock influence and is akin to a beabadoobee meets Art Angels-era Grimes mashup. The album runs the gamut from bedroom pop to guitar-driven indie electro bangers – in what’s been an exceptional year for new music r ..read more

Chappell Roan headlines a sold out show at The Fillmore Philly

Photos and words by Taylor Shields Chappell Roan is a star. That’s what I kept thinking to myself as I watched her perform her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess on Saturday night to a sold out crowd at The Fillmore Philly. Confident and unique, with a voice you feel like you’d hear crooning at the piano in the corner of a dark cabaret bar, unjustly undiscovered. Thankfully, Chappell’s talent was recognized early on, signing a record deal with Atlantic Records at just 19 years old. After releasing a handful of singles with Atlantic, Chappell signed with Island Records earlier ..read more

Read previous – Miya Folick with Aly & AJ at The Fillmore Philly LA-based vocalist, songwriter, and producer Miya Folick played The Foundry in Philly on Sunday, October 8th along with Epitaph recording artist Babebee. We caught Folick earlier this year on tour with Aly & AJ, ahead of the release of her sophomore LP ROACH (check out our coverage of that show here). This time around, Folick brought along a full band that perfectly accentuated the energy and emotional heft of her songs. Folick opened her set with a hushed performance of an unfamiliar song, before launching into ROACH trac ..read more

Horsegirl and Lifeguard performed at House of Independents in Asbury Park, NJ on Saturday, July 22nd. Emerging from Chicago’s burgeoning scene of young bands, both acts are signed to stalwart indie label Matador Records. The bands share more than a record label, though – Lifeguard’s Isaac Lowenstein (drums) is siblings with Horsegirl’s Penelope Lowenstein (guitar, vocals). While their sound draws influence from bygone post-punk/indie rock, make no mistake – they make music for the kids. Released last summer, Versions of Modern Performance is Horsegirl’s impressive debut LP that they wrote and ..read more

Photos and words by Taylor Shields Making their way across North America on their Indie Rock Road Trip tour (which kicked off at the beginning of June), Weezer made a pit stop at The Mann Center in Philly on Tuesday, June 27th. Opening this leg of the tour were Cali pop-punk rockers Joyce Manor and Baltimore-based synth-pop group Future Islands. Despite thunder and lightning storms moving through the area, the show went on with only a short delay in set times. The crowd definitely did not let the rain dampen the mood at The Mann, as Joyce Manor took the stage around 7:30pm getting everyone war ..read more

Photos and words by Taylor Shields The Cure brought their Shows of A Lost World tour to the Wells Fargo Center in Philly on Saturday, June 24th, marking their final week of shows on their first US tour in 15 years. They were supported by Scotland natives, The Twilight Sad. Over 40 years into their run, Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, and company proved just how much life The Cure still has in them. As Smith greeted the crowd, he silently walked to each end of the stage, smiling and giving attention to each section of fans who tossed bouquets of roses and cheered as he walked about, before finally ..read more

Read previous – Day 1 of Adjacent Fest After an eventful Day 1, we took a deliberately relaxed approach to the 2nd day of Adjacent Fest. After catching Oxymorrons and Soul Glo on the Boot stage, we found ourselves a nice spot by the water and took in the beautiful weather for a good chunk of the rest of afternoon. As 5pm approached, we made our way toward the main stage to secure a good spot for Japanese Breakfast. While I’ve already seen Japanese Breakfast on numerous occasions, their performance at Adjacent Fest was my first time seeing them perform along with visuals (projected on the jumbo ..read more

The inaugural edition of the 2-day Adjacent Festival in AC happened over the beautiful Memorial Day weekend. With performances spread across 3 stages (each named after a Monopoly piece) along the beach, the lineup had something for everyone. Taking a look at the lineup, the organizers were clearly thoughtful about featuring acts from the Jersey tri-state/Mid-Atlantic region. Day 1 featured a headlining performance by famed pop punk outfit Paramore – since opening for Taylor Swift on her 2 Eras Tour kickoff dates in Arizona, they’ve just kicked off their own North American headlining tour in su ..read more
