“This may be the last thing I do. I want it to be beautiful.” – John Lurie
John Lurie has continued to be a richly original and eclectic voice in the worlds of music, film and art since the 1970’s. His latest venture, HBO’s irreverent and free spirited Painting with John, is perhaps one of the most beautifully off-kilter docuseries this side of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. The music that Lurie gathered and composed for this show is a satisfying and glorious return to form, and a surprise third act to Lurie’s legendary career.
After a particularly strong case of Lyme’s disease forced Lurie ..read more

With her latest LP, Bite Down, Rosali Middleman has proven once more to be one of our era’s sharpest singer-songwriters.
Recorded once again with the great Mowed Sound (David Nance on bass, Kevin Donahue on drums, and James Schroeder on guitar, along with Destroyer’s Ted Bois on keyboards) as her backing band, Middleman effortlessly combined attractive melodies and pop hooks with a raw, grungy atmosphere that together drive home the record’s melancholic vibe.
The mood of the album is very much between extremes of emotions, as Middleman meditates on the highs and lows of love, longing and heali ..read more

Chicago’s Junegrass has returned with some volatile cosmic boogies that’ll shake off the winter cold and reinvigorate your soul.
The band’s previous album, 2022’s Keeping On, was such a huge favorite in my house when it came out, I practically wore the tape out. Perpetual Stew‘s tracks are so tasty, this tape might soon follow the same fate.
This collection of instrumental jams combines everything from molten Canned Heat riffs to saxophone-infused kosmische stampedes and even some hints of psychedelic soul. The band has a very extensive range on display here, but no matter which direction they ..read more

Patrick Sansone keeps himself busy. Likely most recognized for his role as guitarist/keyboardist/musical Swiss Army knife in Wilco, a position he’s held since 2004 and which has garnered him two Grammy nominations, Sansone also fronts The Autumn Defense alongside Wilco bass player John Stirratt; is one quarter of The Mellotron Variations; has stewarded Big Star’s music into the twenty first century alongside drummer Jody Stephens; and has produced, mixed, arranged, or performed on countless records from the likes of Joseph Arthur, The C ..read more

Speak, Moment brings together three giants of modern improv music: Dave Harrington, Max Jaffe and Patrick Shiroishi. Perhaps unsurprisingly, on this, their first ever jam session, they struck pure sonic magic immediately.
Available today from AKP Recordings, Speak, Moment is an elemental performance of ethereal reveries and guitar-driven super novas. With Shiroishi on saxophones, bells and tambourine, Harrington on guitar and electronics and Jaffe manning the drum kit, sensory percussion and other effects, the three artists beautifully meld together their various different styles and approache ..read more

Seeing that it’s Bandcamp Friday again, I just wanted to take this time to highlight a few new releases from one of the best ambient labels today—Aural Canyon.
At trying times like these, it’s important, and possibly even essential, to have entities like AC that focus on bringing healing, soothing sounds to the world.
With that in mind, here are three new AC releases that I’ve been relaxing to recently:
Lake Mary & Pinyonpine – It’s okay, you can Open your Eyes Now
It’s no surprise that I’m a big fan of Lake Mary, A.K.A. Chaz Prymek. Lately, I’ve been using his music as the background sou ..read more
