We were contacted by Hopskotch, a local Melbourne start-up, looking for help with an industrial design and prototyping project which we completed by using 3D scanning & 3D printing technology. Hopskotch was interested in designing a new reusable coffee cup based on popular products already available on the market with while adding some novel features. We used 3D scanning to reverse engineer a design based on existing popular products and we used our WASP 3D printers to complete 2 prototype iterations for our customer.

In 2008, the Australian Army was looking to upgrade the electronic technology of their fleet of Black Hawk helicopters. BAE Systems Australia was awarded this contract and required an accurate digital CAD of the existing platform onto which to design their intended upgrades. To accomplish this, BAE systems contracted Scan-Xpress to capture an accurate digital twin of the Black Hawk and create usable CAD data of the helicopter. Our team went on site and performed and used GOM TRITOP photogrammetry and an ATOS 3D scanner to capture the required data and produce usable CAD for BAE Systems.

Reverse engineering using 3D scanning is an industry 4.0 technique used by designers and engineers to produce CAD based on physical objects. These CAD models can be modified at will, used to create moulds and tools for manufacturing, or used to produce components directly using additive manufacturing & 3D printing.
In order to demonstrate these concepts, the Scan-Xpress team performed a reverse engineering for production project. Watch the video below to see the full journey, benefits and applications of this technology.
