It’s the Avtomat Kalashnikova. The Kalashnikov. Or just “The AK.” Have you wondered how the AK-47 platform has changed over the decades? There have been improvements over the years. Let’s take a look and see how it has evolved over the decades. StG-44 Assault Rifle — Predecessor to the AK-47 Back in WWII, Germany developed the Sturm Gewehr (StG-44), the first Assault Rifle. They recognized the benefit of a short, maneuverable rifle that fired an intermediate cartridge (7.92x33mm). Most infantry engagements were taking place under 300 yards, so Germany geared this new weapon for those ranges. I ..read more

The Best Ammo For AK Training is Getting Harder to Find

I’m a bit of an ammo nerd, but I’m hardly a snob. As someone who privileges accuracy, I like to find a solid source for factory ammo that performs well in each of my guns. And one of the most important aspects for me is price; it can’t break the bank. But training is important too. And that means tackling problems. There are some guns that don’t care what they eat. Accuracy is less important, sometimes, than sheer impressive violent speed of action. And that’s why I love my AK rifles, but even an AK can defecate in the proverbial place of respite. Frangible Ammo Let’s start with the positive ..read more

In this final installment of the “AK Rifle 101 for New Gun Owners” series, we’ll talk about a few things to look for when shopping for an AK. It may seem like a lot compared to buying an AR-15. I totally get that, but I’ll also point you to good sources of info where you can learn just about anything you care to. I close the series with an ode to my beloved rifle, which I esteem so highly that I named her. Hey, if you know, you know. Some things are just worth the effort. As noted in the first two articles of this series, this is not, nor is it intended to be, the “complete guide to the Kalash ..read more

It’s a fight as old as time: is the AK47 or the M16 better? Paul Harrell takes on the AK-47 vs M16 question in the video below and tries to demonstrate which is more powerful. The main problem is that one is 5.56 and the other is 7.62 but he tries his best to get to an answer for us. Paul admits that this subject has been done so many times, but people still want to hear about it from different sources. To take on the subject, he decided to focus on one aspect only — power or energy foot-pounds. He also admits that ballistic charts don’t always give the best view of the topic because there ar ..read more

The AK, what more can be said of it? It’s a rifle that’s made its way around the world and into the hands of hundreds of military forces. Today I want to talk about the AK clones and AK variants that have popped up in numerous military forces. While many countries will outright adopt an AK series rifle with few changes, other countries opt to make the AK their own. Those are the AK variants we are talking about today. The weird ones, the ‘improved’ ones, if you will. If all a country has done is change the sight hood and add a folding stock, then it won’t make this list. The design differences ..read more

The AK-47 and AR-15 are often compared with hard lines being drawn by gun owners who prefer one over the other. It’s a bit of an apples-and-oranges scenario, though. They are two different rifles designed in contrasting ways but each has a solid following. So, what’s the difference in accuracy? Paul Harrell discusses those details in this video comparison of the two platforms. In this video, Paul Harrel compares the accuracy of the AK-47 to the AR-15 platform. In the video below, the Vickers Tactical Channel reviews the rare MPiKM, the East German AK. This is a fascinating look at a unique rifle that just might be the only one of its kind in the entire United States. A Rare Find Larry Vickers says he found this rifle at Century Arms. Apparently, it had been found sitting on a pallet in Croatia in the back of a warehouse. There is evidence of rust and pitting on its exterior but according to Vickers, the internals are brand new and untouched, never having been fired. In fact, when Vickers fires the rifle on this video it’s the first time the rifle ha ..read more
