What goes wrong on wedding days

I don’t look very often at other wedding photographers websites. Personally, I find they are filled with so much soppy sentimentality. You know what I mean… the CONGRATS YOU JUST GOT ENGAGED! And the ‘I have the luckiest job in the world’ etc. I am sure that some of this is genuine, but mostly it feels contrived to me. Perhaps that’s because I am a more practical, down to earth person. It doesnt mean that I haven’t shed the odd tear myself during a wedding ceremony, and I certainly care very much about the expererience I provide for my couples. But my approach is to provide a rock-solid, depen ..read more

Why does wedding photography seem expensive?
Chris Jack Photography Blog

I have been a full-time wedding photographer since 2016, and I can assure you — this is the wrong business to be in to become wealthy. The real reason I do it is to spend more time with my family, and for the freedom (lifestyle & creativity) it offers. It’s also been great for my health getting outdoors, meeting more people and just feeling happier in general. I recently changed some of my Brisbane Wedding Registry packages to better reflect the reality of what happens on the day. I was advertising the package was 1 Hour 15 minutes, but it was almost always 1 Hour and 30 minutes, But that ..read more

New ‘fully flexible’ booking agreement terms
Chris Jack Photography Blog
by Chris Jack

Most people in Australia opt to ‘DIY’ when it comes to wedding planning. That means lots of things to consider, plan and book. It also means that inevitably some things will change at the last minute. This could be due to one of those common Brisbane thunderstorms which roll in at any time, or due to sickness or absence of guests or in the worst case, vendors. That’s why I thought long and hard about my agreement terms and are now offering what I hope will be some of the most flexible and forgiving terms for everything from your deposit, through to last minute changes. Here is a summary of my ..read more

Why I now offer a raw photo option for all wedding clients
Chris Jack Photography Blog

Raw photos are (as the name implies) the raw original photo captured by the camera with the most information contained in the file. Raw files are larger than JPEG files for this reason, and provide much more latitude to change the photos later. This might include changing the exposure, colours or white balance and all of this can be achieved with almost no reduction in quality. The same cannot be said for editing a JPEG file, which is compressed and contains less information. With AI seeming to exponentially improve over time, I believe that now is the ideal (and right) time to offer raw photo ..read more

How to Pose Yourself During Wedding Portraits
Chris Jack Photography Blog
by Chris Jack

The majority of photos captured by modern, contemporary Australian wedding photographers tend to be photojournalistic in nature. That means they are candid photos capturing moments without setting up shots or posing subjects. But there are two key stages throughout a typical wedding day where your photographer will most likely be directing and posing you for the best possible outcomes. Those two stages are ‘Getting Ready’ photos, and of course the ‘Bridal and Couples Portrait’ session. By keeping these tips in mind, your photographer should automatically be able to capture a larger quantity an ..read more

Brisbane Marriage Registry Photography Overview
Chris Jack Photography Blog
by Chris Jack

INTRODUCTION I have photographed over 50 weddings at the Brisbane Marriage Registry since 2017 and are privileged to have many more booked in 2022 and beyond, so I thought it would be helpful for couples to get my take on the venue, with some ‘insider advice’. I shoot at the registry every few weeks. This advice is comprehensive and focuses on all the nearby parking options depending on the day of week, what the registry is actually like, and what you can expect. The registry is located on the 32nd floor of the cleverly named '180 Brisbane' building in the heart of the Brisbane CBD a ..read more

COVID friendly late cancellation terms

The new Omicron COVID variant first reported in November 2021 in South Africa has been a harsh and brutal reminder that there is no such thing as a ‘safe date’ when it comes to the prospect of a potential postponement or cancellation. In 2020 many couples rescheduled their weddings to 2021, only to find themselves under continuing COVID related restrictions and guest limits. Just when we thought things were getting back to normal and everyone was looking forward to Christmas, we have been reminded again how unpredictable the future really is. For those reasons, in early 2020 I updated my stand ..read more

How to ensure family group photos don't ruin your wedding day
Chris Jack Photography Blog
by Chris Jack

Believe it or not, the Family Group photo session that normally beings after the ceremony has the potential to be one of the riskiest periods of your wedding day timeline. And by risky I don’t mean someone injuring themselves, but for the potential for a poorly planned and managed ‘Family Group Photo’ session eroding the rest of your wedding day timeline. The first tip is ask your wedding photographer to give you 15 minutes after the ceremony (if time permits) to get hugs and congratulations from guests before starting family photos. These photos can be some of the best candid shots of the day ..read more

What are wedding photography touch-ups?
Chris Jack Photography Blog
by Chris Jack

To explain what wedding photography touch-ups on photos actually are, it’s important to know the difference between touch-ups and what you might call ‘standard editing’. Almost every professional wedding photographer shoots in raw format, which simply means the photos are captured in the most flexible and dynamic digital file format for post production changes such as colour and exposure. Raw files contain more information than JPEG files making them more pliable and dynamic. For example, during the reception your photographer will likely use flash to add light to various scenes. It is almost ..read more

Why pre-wedding consultations and cafes don’t mix
Chris Jack Photography Blog
by Chris Jack

The final straw for me was meeting a lovely young couple for their pre-wedding consultation at their local Alderley cafe on a Sunday morning. The client had booked this time and suggested the location. Despite them doing the right thing and arriving early, when I arrived they were seated at the worst possible table in the cafe. It was hot and humid and surrounded by families with kids. Now I have several children of my own under six so I have a pretty high tolerance to noisy kids. But there is only one thing worse than a crying baby in a cafe, and that’s a cup basher. That child who has been b ..read more
