By Mike Whiteman May 4, 2024 On this day in 1931 in a game against Washington, Yankee manager Joe McCarthy wrote up a creative lineup: Earle Combs, cf Jimmy Reese, 2b Babe Ruth, 1b Lou Gehrig, rf Tony Lazzeri, 3b Ben Chapman, lf Lyn Lary, ss Bill Dickey, c Lefty Gomez, p No typo here, as an aging Ruth played first in an effort to ease the wear and tear on his body. Gehrig unfortunately made an error in right field as a part of a five-run sixth in a 7-3 loss. The next day they were back in their usual positions. https://www.baseballreference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA193105040.shtml

Sorry for the delay, I was at my own game. (We lost. I pitched out of the pen, 3 innings, 2 hits, 2 unearned runs, no walks, 1 strikeout.)
The team that matters more (I guess), the Yankees, won in walk-off fashion.
Mike Whiteman will have the game summary in the morning.

PREDICTION: At the All Star Break, Judge will be hitting under .200 and have less that 15 HRs and the Yankees will announce he'll have toe surgery and miss the rest of the season.
Since their 12-3 start the Yankees are 8-10 -- not a good stretch.

The Yankees got off to a great start. People were saying how special the team is. The 10-2 start was a 12 game sample. People saw it as defining.
Since then, the Yankees have gone 10-11. That's a 21 game sample. We're told that this is just a bump in the road, that 21 games isn't defining.
Which is it? (For me, the bigger sample size seems to tell more, no?)

One thing many Yankes fans can't get enough of saying is how bad a right fielder Juan Soto is. Okay. We knew that coming in. So he's not a great defender. Fair enough. Move on. The more people focu ..read more

Well, that was deflating. The bats came alive against the Brewers, and the Yanks looked like they were rounding into a pivotal series with the Orioles. Unfortunately, it sure seems like the Yankees still have some seriously sharp edges to round out. The pitching was more than adequate for the majority of the series. I thought the Orioles pitched really well for two games, but were gettable in the other two. Grayson Rodriguez and Corbin Burnes both pitched like top-of-the-rotation arms against the Yanks, and they split those match-ups in low-scoring affairs. That's good, and I'm not going to ..read more

About Yesterday:
Photo AP
On the 85th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s last game ever played, the Yankees squared off against the Baltimore Orioles at a sun drenched Camden Yards in front of 27,299 fans, many whom drove down from the New York area anticipating a final round brawl between the two AL East heavy weights.
A chance to send a message to the defending AL East Champs.
What they got was an uninspiring performance as the Yankees failed to even the series in a 7-2 Orioles victory and lost the series 3 games to 1.

The Yanks lost again.
A week or so ago, I said, "The Yankees squandered that great start." I was told I was wrong. I'm not.
A lot was made about how well the Yankees did against the Astros when the season started, but since then we've seen that the Astros... aren't good.
May 2 is now in the books and Aaron Judge is batting .197. If that's not a troubling sign, if that's not concerning, I don't know what is.
Judge had one hit in the series. One. "He's Back!" so many said. No, he's not. Not at all. A guy who is back, doesn't go for 1 for 4 games. Now 1-for ..read more
