Last year’s snow deluge in California, which quickly erased a two-decade-long megadrought, was essentially a once-in-a-lifetime rescue from above, a new study found. Don’t get used to it because with climate change, the 2023 California snow bonanza —a record for snow on the ground on April 1 — will be less likely in the future, said the study in Monday's journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study authors coined the term “snow deluge” for one-in-20-year heavy snowfalls when it’s cold and wet enough to maintain a deep snowpack through April 1. But even ..read more

Sunshine, warm temperatures expected in Southern California this week

Warmer temperatures and plenty of sunshine are in the forecast for Southern California this week. With a ridge of high pressure continuing to develop over the Pacific, the Southland will likely stay dry through next weekend. "The ridging will continue to evolve, giving us a stronger offshore flow for the next couple of days," said KTLA 5's Kaj Goldberg. "That will give us some nice, warm temperatures as we head through much of this upcoming work week." Although we can expect some clouds to develop over the beaches, they should clear up by Monday afternoon. The highs this week in Los Angeles wi ..read more

Despite the wet winter, no ‘superbloom’ for California this year
KTLA » Los Angeles Weather
by Marc Sternfield

A year ago, thousands of Californians trekked to nature preserves and scenic hillsides to enjoy the epic "superbloom" of wildflowers that followed one of the wettest and snowiest winters on record. The blooms were so vivid and abundant they were even visible from space. Fast forward to Spring 2024 and, after another extraordinarily wet and snowy winter, there was hope a “superbloom” would materialize again. Unfortunately, it hasn’t - and experts say that's largely the result of the weather and the end of the drought. “Last year's 'superbloom' was preceded by a significant drought,” says Naomi ..read more

A large section of Topanga Canyon Boulevard will likely remain closed until the fall as Caltrans works to clear a massive landslide that buried the scenic road and continues to pose a safety risk, officials acknowledged on Thursday. The slide occurred on March 9 during an intense rainstorm that caused flooding and mudslides in many areas of Southern California, including Los Angeles County. State Road 27 was immediately closed from Grand View Drive to Pacific Coast Highway. Caltrans estimates that 9.2 million pounds of earth, or 4,600 tons, gave way just south of the town of Topanga, sending a ..read more

After another cold, wet, and windy weekend, temperatures are expected to rise across Southern California this week. The Southland dealt with more rainfall and gusty winds Saturday and Sunday, while parts of the mountain areas were hit with snowfall. But, the forecast calls for sunshine and warmer temperatures as we get into Tuesday, and the dryer conditions are expected to last through next Saturday and Sunday. "By Tuesday, into Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and, next weekend, we're looking forward to above normal temperatures," said KTLA 5's Kaj Goldberg. "It will be nice and warm." Monday loo ..read more

A High Surf Advisory has been issued as SoCal braces for gusty winds and two rounds of heavy rain this weekend. Large breaking waves up to 8 feet high are in the forecast, the National Weather Service said, adding that dangerous rip currents can also be expected.  The advisory goes into effect for the Malibu coast and all Ventura and Los Angeles County beaches at 9 a.m. Saturday.  “There is an increased risk for ocean drowning,” the High Surf Advisory warned. “Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off b ..read more

Southern California's weather is about to take a hard left turn. After a stretch of ideal spring days with highs in the upper 70s and 80s, a low-pressure system will sweep through the region this weekend, bringing cooler temperatures and rain. “A ridge of high pressure over SoCal is breaking down and sliding to the east,” said KTLA 5 News weather anchor Kaj Goldberg. “As that happens, it will allow the clouds to begin to fill in as the cold front moves in.” Daytime high temperatures will drop by about 10 degrees on Friday in most locations. When the rain arrives Saturday, much of Southern Cali ..read more
