The Poor Grey Pilot

Hello pilots! I apologize for the huge gap since my last post. The majority of my free time for last several months has involved searching for, buying, and moving to my first house. I am finally starting to settle in and hope to get game time back up and running! As for posts, my next planned one is The Mandalorian conversion. I have run into some technical difficulties with it, but plan on getting through these soon. Thank you for patience. Additionally, I have several ideas for some homebrew updates to 1.0 ships. With these small updates, I can make “booster pack” posts to add some new and f ..read more

Thank you for making the Poor Grey Pilot great!               I am excited to talk about the announcement of U-wing starship. In today’s article, I want to explore the implications of the Pivot Wing and discuss the pos ..read more

Good day, pilots. I wish to express thanks for your patience. These last few weeks have been busy as I've been getting ready for school. I am also dedicating more writing towards editing as I am working on possibly making a Poor Grey Pilot book.  So we'll see how that goes, wish me luck. Intro                 In today's article, I want to cover the game stages of X-wing Miniatures. I am not referring to phases of each round, but rather the stages a game ..read more

"Oh, It's Beautiful" - Skipray Blastboat Release
The Poor Grey Pilot

Good day, pilots! I apologize it took so long to get this PDF ready, but it is finally here. I am pleased to present to you the print-n-play file for the Skipray Blastboat expansion! Please note, I included the large base cutouts for the ship, in case that is the ship base size you plan on flying. I personally don't use these cutouts, and just fly the Skipray on a medium base. As a reminder, you can get medium bases in the 1st Edition Saw's Renegades and TIE Reaper expansions. I have had a blast flying this ship in my home games, and I hope that you have fun trying out some new pilots, upgrad ..read more

The Car'Das Boys Are Coming - Skipray Blastboat Design Part 5
The Poor Grey Pilot
by Brian Morgan Shaw

Intro Welcome pilots! Today, we are discussing the second half of the upgrades that come with the Skipray Blastboat expansion. These four upgrades are all crew cards, showcasing the Car'Das smugglers in Timothy Zahn's trilogy. Let's get to it! Talon Karrde As the Car'Das leader, Talon relies on always being cautious and well-informed. As such, it makes sense that his fighting style is about biding his time to know the most opportune move to make next. While researching how to make such a mechanic, I came across the Passive Sensors upgrade from X-wing 2.0. It was a perfect fit. With Talon fly ..read more

My Fourth X-wing Miniatures Modification - A Smorgasbord of Projects
The Poor Grey Pilot

This week I am happy to present some of the painting mods I've been doing on the side. Sometimes it is really nice to take a break from strategy and just enjoy a fun hobby. Rebels' New TIE                 When the First Order TIE Fighter was announced, I wasn't one of the people who jumped on the bandwagon of repainting existing TIE miniatures. First, I am not brave enough to try white paint yet. But I was also suspicious that the TIE/fo would make an appearance a ..read more

"We Can Still Outmaneuver Them" - Skipray Blastboat Design Part 4
The Poor Grey Pilot
by Brian Morgan Shaw

IntroWelcome back, pilots! We are talking about upgrades for the homebrew Skipray Blastboat expansion. After all of my brainstorming and playtesting, I created a total of nine upgrades cards. However, I couldn't fit them all onto one post. So today, we will look at the first five: two titles, two systems, and a torpedo. I will cover how each upgrades works, how they benefit the Skipray and other ships, and which pictures I picked for card artwork. Assault and Patrol Loadouts I talked about the design behind the Skipray titles in a previous design post. The final designs are pretty much the ..read more

The Poor Grey Pilot

Great day, pilots! Welcome to part 3 of the Skipray Blastboat design. Click here for Part 1 and Part 2. Today, we are covering everything that deals with the actual Skipray miniature on the tabletop. We'll analyze the size of the ship, finalize its ship base size, and go over the painting process. When we looked at the Skipray in Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire, we got the following parameters for the size of the ship: The Skipray is lean. The Skipray is long, twice as long as an X-wing. The Skipray's cockpit isn't very roomy, like an X-wing. Luke classifies the Skipray as a fighter. Base ..read more

Today I present part 2 of a series where I talk about some of the more advanced aspects of X-wing Miniatures. Last week we took a look at the Pillars of X-wing and how they affect players' game tastes and squad building. In this article I want to delve into some of the nuances of how one wants to place obstacles during a match. We will go over how obstacles play a role in competitive tournaments. Then we will take a look at how certain build types, pilots, and upgrades work best when paired with a specific obstacle deployment. Let's jump ..read more
