Norwegian developer H2Carrier has applied for permission to build two massive offshore wind farms in the most northeastern part of Norway in order to produce green hydrogen and ammonia. The intention is to build 1.55GW of wind power capacity on the north coast of the Finnmark region in order to produce green hydrogen and ammonia on board a floating vessel designed by the company and moored at the site. H2Carrier says its True North Green Ammonia project would produce 109,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year at the site — suggesting an electrolyser size of about 1GW — and 610,000 tonnes of gree ..read more

China is making “staggering” progress in its net zero drive and will quintuple its renewables capacity by 2050, according to a new DNV report – although fossil fuels will “persist” in its energy mix. China today emits a third of global energy-related CO2 emissions but by mid-century will have cut that to a fifth, the report on the country’s energy transition said. “Intense policy focus and technological innovation are transforming China into a green energy powerhouse,” said Remi Eriksen, CEO of the Norwegian energy consultancy. “There is much to admire about China’s energy transition. Denmark has launched its largest-ever offshore wind tender, covering six sites with a combined capacity of 6GW. For every gigawatt built, the equivalent to the power consumption of 1 million European households will be consumed, the Nordic country’s climate and energy ministry said. Denmark will allow developers to ‘overplant’ the sites, giving them the freedom to install a total of up to 10GW or more across the sites. Chinese wind turbine manufacturers in the past have produced mostly for their massive home market and had a tough time breaking into global markets, especially those in Europe and the US. But the pressure is increasing, as the Chinese players continue to produce at far lower prices, have greatly improved their technology, offer bigger turbines, and are increasingly successful in international markets, a new study by German consulting firm Greentech Partners found.
