Writing Prompt: What’s your favourite character’s biggest flaw?

Let’s continue with the theme of the last prompt, but this time, let’s look at the biggest flaw of our favourite characters! Similar, but different! I’ve mentioned it before, and it’s still true, that Seiya Ryuuguuin is my favourite character. The guy is just a total legend, and there really isn’t anyone like him out there. So what’s his biggest flaw? He’s too cautious! And that’s a wrap, so what’s your favourite character’s biggest flaw? Just kidding. At face value, you may think something like that he takes too much on himself and doesn’t rely on others, but if you pay attention in the ser ..read more

Writing Prompt: What’s your favourite anime’s biggest flaw?

Well, this is a good one I think, but it’s also difficult right off the bat because I have to decide upon my favourite anime again. Or at least, my favourite at the moment. I’d say that my favourite fantasy title of late has to be Eminence in Shadow, so I’ll go with that for this prompt. There’s just so much I love about the story, how it’s told, and the dynamics that go on there, as well as some mysteries surrounding the nature of everything. But anyways, this prompt isn’t for rambling about my favourite anime, but rather, to point out it’s biggest flaw. “It’s too short” – Many people Of cou ..read more

Writing Prompt: What are your thoughts on anime demographic genre categories?

Here’s an interesting one I found recently, it’s along the lines of a recent genre prompt I wrote about. This would be referring to genres such as shounen, shoujo, seinen, josei. Basically, the categories would be boys, girls, men, women. I guess there’s probably another genre category as well for children. And so the follow-up question would be something like, are these genres even necessary? First off, I could see why some may feel like these sorts of genre categories aren’t necessary. With the exception of children, one could argue that putting a label along the lines of male / female coul ..read more

Writing Prompt: How often do you watch anime outside of your comfort zone? And how do you rate them?

It’ll be a quick and easy prompt this time around! How often do you watch anime outside of your comfort zone, and then how would you rate them? For some there may be a more involved thought process behind this, but for me it’s pretty straight forward. I don’t watch anime outside of my comfort zone very often, maybe just a few a year unless I am purposely doing something like the anime genre review collection I did last year where I force myself to watch anime from various genres I normally wouldn’t look at. So yeah, not often. Typically, after a season wraps up, I’ll binge all of the fantasy ..read more

Sousou no Frieren Review (Spoiler Free)

Let’s take a look at something from the Fall 2023 anime season that recently wrapped up – Sousou no Frieren. Interesting how the Japanese title differs from the English one. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End vs. something that’s more like “Frieren’s Funeral Procession” (or “Frieren at the Funeral” as it’s listed in MAL). The two different titles paint a different picture I think. But I won’t really dive into it, you can think about that for yourself! Synopsis Frieren is an elven mage who participated in the defeat of the demon lord alongside her party of heroes. Afterwards, they all part ways. Ma ..read more

Writing Prompt: What was an anime moment that made you think?

Pretty broad one here, seeing as there are many different sorts of thoughts you could have after watching something. But nothing wrong with that! I’ve got one that comes to mind, it’s the first clear moment where I watched an anime and was like “that’s a pretty neat idea to think about”. And that’s actually the Endless Eight from Haruhi. My first watch of this goes way back to when I was still relatively new to anime, still watching dubbed anime even. It’s not a particularly deep thought or anything, but I just remember watching the Endless Eight (not all at once, maybe over 2 or 3 sittings ..read more

Writing Prompt: Are there too many genres in anime? Or not enough?

Here’s an interesting one. I feel like I know what most people would answer here, and I would be included in that… but the perspective of there being too many genres is intriguing so I wanted to try and understand why someone would feel that way. So to get the obvious out of the way, if I had to guess, most people would probably prefer for there to be even more genres than we currently commonly see. This is coming from the perspective of someone that uses MAL to find anime, so maybe other sites do have an expanded list of genres / tags for anime. I can come up with a few genres right now that ..read more

Writing Prompt: Do you enjoy OVAs / movies take place outside of the main storyline?

The question was more asking about OVAs, but I feel like movies can work here too. The basic gist here is referring to series where an OVA comes out after or between seasons that basically has no actual bearing on the main story, or maybe the main story is already wrapped up and the OVA is just like a fluff piece. Either way, this is sort of along the lines of content that’s not canon, so it’s not important, it’s just something there for fun. I know a lot of shonen series have all kinds of movies where a bunch of stuff happens, but then it’s just never acknowledged in the actual series, so tha ..read more

Writing Prompt: What’s a well-liked anime that you didn’t really like?

Let’s go with a quick prompt this time around, because I want to get a post written, but I also want to go watch Solo Leveling! So what’s a well-liked anime that I didn’t really like? This one didn’t take long for me to think of. I may have even used this anime in a past post, it’s a pretty simple topic so I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve already touched upon it. Anyways, my anime of choice here is Kaguya-sama: Love is War. I know that a lot of people found it a lot of fun and very cute, but personally, I felt like Kaguya-sama was a bit too much of the same joke repeated over and over, and a f ..read more

Writing Prompt: If you HAD to rewatch an anime 10 times in a row, which anime would you choose?

Thought this was a funny one on MAL, I immediately knew I had to use it as a prompt here. I’m pretty big on rewatching anime, but I can’t say I’ve ever watched an anime 10 times in a row…! Alright, let me set the stage here. You’re sitting at home, nice and comfy. You just finished watching a series, when you get the phone call. You don’t recognize the number, but at the same time, it is from your local area code… but then if it’s truly important they’ll call back. So you let it ring out, and then after a moment of silence, it starts to ring once again. Same number. Guess it was important aft ..read more
