Big Kev Verses Tour Divide

Following on from the success of my Rhino Run adventure, I wasted no time in planning for The Next Big Thing; the Tour Divide. Such a well trodden course made decision making about bike set-up shockingly easy. There was no doubt in my mind that a rigid fork, 29er running something like a 2.1-2.25 tyres was the weapon of choice for efficiency and fun on the largely GRoad route that makes up the 4300km long Tour Divide.  The Tour Divide is so long that it requires maximum rider comfort to finish the ride; it demands a bike that will maintain speed for the long flowing gravel roads, a bike t ..read more

Tour Divide 2023 - first afterthoughts
Curve Cycling Blog

Trying to condense many years worth of anticipation & the Tour Divide journey into basically a postcard from Antelope Wells is no small feat, perhaps more of a challenge than the ride itself. I can say that at the end of this adventure, I was left mostly satisfied but also unsure as to what to make of it. As I lay napping in the heat after reaching my destination, I was equal parts confused about how I felt & overwhelmed with gratitude for the people I met & the support I received along the way.  In Banff in the days before the initial roll out, I was nervous as hell about t ..read more

Three Peaks Bike Race - Jimmy's Pre-Race Report
Curve Cycling Blog

Come July I’ll be racing my bike again across another continent - this time Europe. Twelve months ago I was touring Europe on my ‘Bucket List Bike Tour’ and crossed paths with the 2022 edition of the Three Peaks Bike Race, meeting the race leader and a few other riders on course. That was the first I had heard of the event. I was captivated and it was an easy no brainer decision to put myself on the start line 12 months later. So at midday on July 9th, I’ll depart Vienna with 150 other racers heading west to Barcelona via the Dolomites, Massif Central and Pyrenees. 2023 will be the ..read more

If you're a fan of bike touring, you've probably heard of the legendary Sarah Hammond - the badass cyclist who conquered the gruelling Race to the Rock Race not once, but three times! The Tasmanian Trail is no joke - it's a rugged, 480-kilometre stretch of terrain that winds through some of t ..read more

Race To The Rock 2023 - Two Rocks for the Price of One
Curve Cycling Blog
by Sarah Hammond

Sarah and Jesse recently packed their Big Kevs and headed for a warmer climate to recon this year’s Race to the Rock entrée route in sunny Queensland. After a change in race format last year, 2023 will see the return of the original finish line, Uluru. As with every edition of Race to the Rock, riders must complete the route unsupported, carrying all they need to survive. Careful planning will be required to tackle long, remote sections without resupply points, and as the route heads closer to Uluru, the weather conditions can get hot, dry and arid, putting the rider's mental endurance to the ..read more

Jesse and Sarah's Queensland Bikepacking Adventure on Curve Big Kevs

Teef (Sarah Hammond) and I (Jesse Carlsson) recently spent a couple of weeks test riding the 2023 Race to the Rock Entree course from Brisbane to Rockhampton. Queensland is hard to beat between May and October with blue skies and warm weather, without the humidity and storms of the tropical summer. It was my first time on a long ride with the Big Kev. Even though we "flashpacked" the route, staying indoors every night at accommodation along the way, we still needed to carry quite a bit of load. I needed to work along the way and so I had to carry a laptop, keyboard and mouse. We also needed ..read more

Understanding the Curve GMX+ Geometry
Curve Cycling Blog

In this blog post we explain the design intent of the GMX+, our bottom up, redesign of an off-road bikepacking platform. It has definitely taken some time for our community to understand the very specific geometry we have arrived at after years of in-the-field testing in some of the toughest riding conditions on the planet. What follows applies to both the steel and titanium GMX+ bikes, which have the same geometry.   To start, we should mention that we have not just thrown a bike together from a back-of-the-napkin sketch. We have some credentials in this space that we are very  ..read more

A Tour of April's Little (XS) Big Kev before the Tour Divide
Curve Cycling Blog
by Joe Grace

The Tour Divide is an annual unsupported bikepacking race that traverses the Continental Divide from Banff in Canada to the U.S. border with Mexico. The route is over 4000 km long with more than 60,000 meters (read LOTS of mountain passes!) of climbing. It’s a route that captured my imagination long before I started riding. Having the good health, time & resources to even attempt a ride like this, is something that was beyond my wildest dreams as recently as a few short years ago. In 2020, having never attempted anything like it before, some friends & I had this crazy idea to enter Cur ..read more
