Let’s continue with our new series of introduction posts. Shit I don’t currently own, but that’s worth keeping a tab on.
J-Soldier
A series of indie shorts by Ryoichi Sakai produced for the Kamen Rider Fan Club “Phoenix”. A total of 13 movies were produced between 1981 to ??? … They were made mostly for club screenings and AFAIK, no VHS releases exist. Most of the cast members were relatives or friends of the director. The first one was even called Kamen Rider J before being renamed to J-Soldier, predating the official one.

There is zero information on these online, but ..read more

So I’m aware this site is mostly dedicated to video archiving, but I like just writing about things sometimes, even if I don’t own them, and especially so if English and even Japanese sources are hard to come by.
Sukeban Deka had a massive cultural impact in the 80s, so it’s unsurprising that it would inspire a wave of imitators.
Sailor Fuku Deka
Late 1980s original video action drama directed by Gojuhiro Yamamae that depicts the battle between high school girls who suddenly become detectives one day and an evil army. After discovering a mysterious sword, three high school girls become sailor ..read more

Note: This is NOT a movie that I have, so I cannot provide a rip or anything else like that. I just want to create a record that this thing did in fact exist.
I was waybacking a certain studio’s old website (2002) when I suddenly stumbled upon something… interesting. All of the videos in the “special effects” sections are parodies of classic tokusatsu properties, save for one notable exception…
Yes, that’s an X-rated parody of Tom Holland’s 1988 horror masterpiece “Child’s Play”, aka. “The Killer Doll”, aka. “The Devil’s Doll”, add like a hundred other alternative titles, you know the one. H ..read more

The infamous live action adaptation of Sailor M_ _n that aired on Japanese TV… what, 20 years ago?! The one with idols and talking plushies.
Most of the episodes floating around online seem to be encoded at 30fps, but much like Phase 1 Heisei KR, this show used early digital cameras that shot at a smooth frame rate of 60fps.
Early 00s plastic flip phones!
The creator of the original manga had more direct involvement, and even called it her favorite adaptation.

This was mentioned in the previous post, but rather than dealing with laserdiscs myself, I found a decent quality laserdisc rip of Tomomi’s “Graduation” on the website formerly known as Twitter, split into 13 parts and stitched back together here. The story is about a student’s crush on her teacher. Released by Cosmos Plan in 1987.
Indeed, Mr. Saitoh did.
The drama-like narrative production style Makoto Saitoh was known for is still present. There is a more traditional AV scene in here, but it’s still conservative, and the mosaic censorship is so heavy ..read more

Contains nudity and non-graphic sexual expressions.
More vintage Cosmos comfy Plan. First, I made a mistake about the director’s name, it’s actually Makoto Saitoh, not Sakai. This video was released in 1989 and stars Tomomi Akimoto, and it’s a pretty straight love/romance story. Again, what’s notable about Sakai Saitoh is his ability to tell stories from a pure visual perspective without many spoken lines, almost like an image video. He perfectly capture the aesthetics and feel of the bubble period. Unfortunately, a lot of his movies seem to be laserdisc exclusives, and I’m not ..read more

Non-adult re-edit of Samuraiger (TOR-54) released on DVD in 2005 and starring Momoe Mizusawa. Yes, a certain adult video producer predated the triangle company in doing a Samurai-themed Sentai. The JAV portions of the film have been removed to avoid issues with Archive’s moderation. Note the Star Wars toy lightsabers and unlicensed Gorenger BGM.
