Given the dry conditions that prevailed in Iowa in 2023, there will be herbicide carryover in 2024. Suspect herbicides that are likely to carry over include but are not limited to atrazine, clopyralid and the various HPPD inhibitor herbicides. Specifically, the accuracy, evenness and timing (i.e., later in the season) of the 2023 herbicide applications can increase the potential for interactions with the 2024 herbicides. However, just because herbicide residues exist in the soil does not mean crops will succumb to herbicide injury. If spring conditions are not stressful to the 2024 crop, herbi ..read more

Nitrification-inhibitor products – either alone or in combination with an urease inhibitor – reduced N2O emissions by 38% to 43% compared to untreated urea in spring wheat in southern Manitoba. However, there were few yield or grain protein benefits to using the EEFs products. Environment and Climate Change Canada has set a goal to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from nitrogen (N) fertilizer by 30% below 2020 levels by 2030. Reducing nitrous oxide N2O emissions will be a key strategy to meeting this goal, while maintaining or increasing crop yields. A Canadian Prairie research st ..read more

As humankind evolved from a nomadic hunter-gatherer society into agricultural-based settlement populations, there is a reason domesticated bovine played a major role as a farmed species. Cattle are hardy and resilient, defending themselves against many potentially harmful viruses, bacteria and parasitic burdens. That said, as their caregivers, there are scenarios where beef cattle producers can help ease that burden by implementing some simple barriers against disease to keep their herds productive and healthy. 1. Grazing leases and shared pastures Producers can play a proactive role in ..read more
