Jump Start Your January Today
The Napkin Hoarder

My husband was always big on New Year’s resolutions, so when we got married, the first week of January was devoted to coming up with and sharing our resolutions. By mid-March, most, if not all, our resolutions would have faded. And every year, we would go through this exercise with little success. One year, my husband decided to start on his resolutions in December and when January came, he told me he had already started working on his resolutions! The following year, I decided to do the same and start a month early. My resolutions for that year lasted several ..read more

5 Tips for Talking with Kids About Current Events

Yesterday, was a difficult day for many of us. For me, it was a culmination of not just the past several years, but the several hundreds of years of our history here in the United States. I received texts, emails, and saw posts on various social media channels as well as every news outlet. It was a major national event. As I was trying to process the events as they unfolded, I realized that my husband and I would have to also process this together with our daughter. Late in the evening and early this morning, I received many emails ..read more

Since our family’s trip to South Korea in April of 2019, I have been delving more deeply into my Korean roots. I have been mourning the loss of my Korean culture and traditions for the past several years. It has definitely been a journey, but the past year and a half has guided me deeper into this reconnection and reclaiming.  With parents who immigrated to the United States in the 70s, I was started out my life between two cultures. One was Western, the other Eastern. One was viewed as aspirational, the other was something to leave behind. One was ..read more

I’ve probably read Lamentations 5 more than a dozen times in the past couple days along with this version of Lamentations 5 that was originally from Dr. Soong-Chan Rah’s book Prophetic Lament: A Call for Justice in Troubled Times: Remember, Lord, what happened to Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd;look and see the disgraceful way their bodies were treated. Our inheritance of the image of God in every human beinghas been co-opted and denied by others. The family of Ahmaud, Breonna, and George Floyd has lost their loved ones, widowed mothers once again grieve their dead children. We mus ..read more

Yesterday, my news and social media feeds were filled with two stories – one about a woman who called the cops on a man in Central Park, and another one about a man named George Floyd who was killed by police brutality. I was horrified, angry, sad, conflicted, and restless. In the midst of sorting through all the reactions, news stories and the like, I felt this uneasiness come over me. The first time I felt it was when I read this post by Raise Your Voice author, Kathy Khang: And then, I took a moment to watch the video ..read more

Sleeping Stones Book Review

This is a sponsored post. I received a free digital code to review, but all opinions expressed in this post are my own. I was excited for the chance to review Sleeping Stones because everyone in my house loves reading! We usually have stacks of books from the library and bookstores, but we also have been embracing reading our books digitally, especially when we are traveling. I was intrigued by collaboration from Madeleine Editions because they weave in music, beautiful illustrations and stories from around the world.  As a former teacher, I love that their books are multi-sensory. Representation Matters

This post is sponsored by UPtv, but all opinions are my own. Just a few days ago, I was talking to my daughter and she said to me, “Maybe I’ll be an actor.” Wow. When I was a kid, I never would’ve thought it was possible for someone who looked like me to be an actor – stage or screen. See the tweet from Constance Wu? Yes to all of that! And here’s some more history that’s happening – Fresh Off the Boat is the first Asian American led network TV show to get syndicated! To me, that’s pretty amazing ..read more
