With Dick Redner’s Passing, The Grocery Industry Loses One Of Its Unsung Stars
Food Trade News

Two days after his 73rd birthday on April 25, Richard E. Redner, chairman of Redner’s Markets, died. His passing leaves a tremendous void for his family, the company’s more than 5,500 associates and the entire grocery industry. Dick Redner was one of the first retailers I met when I moved to the Mid-Atlantic in 1978 to acquire Food World and Food Trade News. My first impression wasn’t a particularly lasting one – I found him to be very quiet with an almost aloof manner. Of course, little did I know then that his father Earl “The Chief,” the founder of Redner’s Markets, was a dynamo who possess ..read more

Food Trade News

Happy Spring, everyone, and hopefully you are able to read this because your eyes are still intact because you heeded all the warnings of the Eclipse Totality and your brains haven’t been too rattled by the big earthquake. As much as I wanted to take a glance up at the eclipse (sans glasses), I didn’t have to worry because where I was when it occurred the weather was cloudy and there was nothing to see at all. The New Jersey Food Council (NJFC) held its annual Trade Relations conference at Caesar’s in Atlantic City. The event always brings out a good-sized crowd and especially so since new Wak ..read more

Who watched the eclipse? (hand up) Who traveled to watch the eclipse? Many people I know traveled hours away to get a glimpse of the phenomenon, that wasn’t a “total” eclipse in the Philadelphia area. Even so, it was awesome to watch and who knows if we’ll even be here when the next one comes around? Earth is an incredible place. Let’s keep working to make it an even better planet for generations to come. Happy Earth Day 2024! Just after we went to press last month, on March 20, Wegmans opened their 19th store in Pennsylvania and their 111th store overall in Yardley, Bucks County. To give a li ..read more

Lina Khan, meet William Tong and Bob Duff. Kahn may not know these two gentlemen but once the introduction is made I’m certain that you all will share the same beliefs about the evils of corporate America, especially retail food operators. The chairwoman of the FTC, whose office recently released a report largely blaming major food retailers for creating the inflationary environment of the past three years (see story on page 1), can genuinely claim she understands the nuances of the retail food business (even if her conclusions are distorted and erroneous). I can’t say that about Mr. Tong and ..read more

Brown Family Broadens Philly Presence With Di Bruno Bros. Investment
Food Trade News
by Terri Maloney

The Brown family, already a strong presence in the Philadelphia area retail food landscape, is adding to its portfolio with its recent investment in popular specialty food retailer and importer, Di Bruno Bros. At presstime, final details were still being hammered out but executives from both merchants issued a statement acknowledging the investment. “We can confirm that a Brown-owned company is a secured creditor of Di Bruno Bros. with the intention of leveraging the retail experience, technology acumen and systems at Brown’s to create a new entity that is financially resilient and builds upon ..read more
