Having written about staffing shortages from several angles, I want to explore a forgotten group: those that have been or are currently in the legal system.        Addressing the obvious concern of safety for our elders is of course most important, but if there was a vetting procedure and a way to closely track those wanting to enter or re-enter the healthcare field it might be a worthwhile exercise both to help fill the vast vacancies in staffing and to get these prior offenders back into society as a valuable citizen.       Mis ..read more

How the loss of the KHPOP Grant is impacting our LTC Communities and Students
Allied Health Career Training Blog

Last year the government ended the KHPOP grant which had been around for about 12 years and was the biggest payor of entry level healthcare training for schools such as ours. This could not have happened at a worse time with healthcare severely struggling to rebuild after the pandemic and soring inflation resulting in less funds for potential students to spend on education. The result has changed the landscape of healthcare training. Our school has suffered an enormous blow from the loss of the grant. Literally thousands of students that came though our doors took advantage of this grant to ta ..read more

KWCH TV had story about the dire need for staffing in Long Term Care communities to the point several are to the point of closing. I took to our Facebook page and asked our followers for their thoughts on the matter. So many were quick to respond, with over 130 comments in just a few days, I saw a few common threads that were in almost every reply, below are some representative replies.  I should say that I did hear a few comments regarding vaccine mandates, but they were less than I had expected. 1.)    Pay – The pay does not equal the work. Why would I go back to LTC, whe ..read more

Before she founded Allied Health Career Training (AHCT), Dianne Powell simply wanted to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She began as a CNA in 1990 then continued to make steady progress, which provided added motivation and inspiration. “I ended up doing very well, and every step of that empowered me, and it helped me move up,” she said. Ultimately, Powell would come to revolutionize how CNAs, medical assistants, technicians, and others are prepared to provide care. She recently shared her inspirational journey on Experience Care’s LTC Heroes podcast: Upon learning of a major st ..read more

The 3rd installment in a series of blogs unearthing why there is a crisis in staffing for healthcare workers. Child Care:       The pandemic shut down many schools and daycares, resulting in daycare providers seeking work elsewhere causing an already plaguing issue to become severe. Many healthcare workers have young children, all day school begins at age 5 or 6 and is from around 7:40 to 3:30 leaving a 1 to 2 hour gap on each side, if not more as many work 12 hour shifts. Childcare or lack there of has been a problem for over a decade, but as with everything else it h ..read more

Nursing homes, hospitals and almost every medical setting has struggled for years to fill staffing, now the situation has gone from bad to a truly dire situation. The reasons run deep and there is no shortage of finger pointing. The easiest way for many is to point blame at “this lazy young generation” I strongly feel this is a weak and misguided shallow answer. The issues are complex and tangled but let me take a few moments to try my best to point out what I have noted to be some of the strongest downward pressures on the recruiting and retaining of healthcare workers.
