Group of Seven nations have agreed to target the first half of 2030s to phase out coal, according to the UK’s energy and nuclear minister, a key milestone for some of the world’s most industrialized economies seeking to switch to more sustainable fuels. “To have the G-7 nations come around the table and send that signal to the world, that we, the advanced economies of the world, are committing to phasing out coal by the early 2030s is quite incredible,” Andrew Bowie told Class CNBC, calling the agreement “historic.” The nations — the US, UK, Germany, France, Canada, Japan and Italy — agreed on ..read more

BHP Group can’t cherry pick Anglo American assets without paying a hefty premium, Anglo investors told Reuters, concerned that they stand to lose heavily by holding shares in South African subsidiaries. The world’s No. 1 miner is weighing up its next move after its initial $39 billion takeover proposal for smaller rival Anglo was rejected last week. The proposed premium was 31% on Anglo’s implied value. BHP has proposed that Anglo sell its shares in units Anglo Platinum (Amplats) and Kumba Iron Ore as an option to exit the South African assets it doesn’t want included in the deal. Researchers at the Clean Air Research Laboratory of the Korea Institute of Energy Research have developed a process that converts 10 tonnes of livestock manure into biochar (biomass and charcoal) in a single day. The core of this Manure To Biochar (MTB) process is a dehydration and drying technology that reduces the moisture content in livestock manure, which is over 80%, to less than 20%. The research team successfully designed and built an integrated system that combines a drying process owned by the KIER, a dehydration process from the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (K ..read more

Several of Glencore Plc’s (LON: GLEN) largest shareholders believe that the company should retain its coal assets, according to people familiar with the matter, throwing a proposed spinoff into doubt. Glencore, the world’s largest shipper of thermal coal with a market capitalization of about $73 billion, had said it intended to spin the business off within two years of closing a deal to buy the steelmaking coal assets of Teck Resources Ltd.  But major Glencore shareholders believe that the company would be better off retaining its coal business, the people said, asking not to be ..read more

BHP Group’s proposed takeover of rival miner Anglo American is one of those rare instances where a mega-merger actually makes strong business sense, but it will be difficult to pull off to the satisfaction of all parties. BHP, the world’s largest mining company, offered $39 billion last week to buy Anglo, a move the London-listed miner that grew out of South Africa rejected as “significantly” undervalued. The expectation now is that BHP may boost its offer, or other buyers for Anglo, or parts of its diversified portfolio, may emerge. Much of the media attention has focused on Anglo’s copper as ..read more

Indonesian coal company PT Harum Energy is looking to buy more nickel mines as it ceases further investment in fossil fuels in order to prepare for the energy transition. China’s Tsinghua University researchers established a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation protocol for disaster risk caused by linkage failure and instability of residual coal pillar and rock strata in multi-coal seam mining. In a paper published in the journal Geohazard Mechanics, the scientists explain that coal pillars from multi-coal seams mining, when unstable, pose significant risks during both the production and closure stages. Their failure can exert intense dynamic pressure on lower coal seams, resulting in substantial deformation and damage to support structures and mining tunnel ..read more

When former boss Mark Cutifani left Anglo American Plc in mid-April 2022, things had rarely looked better for the century-old miner. Anglo stock hit a record the same day. Two years later, the company’s reputation is in tatters. A series of missteps had sent its value plunging by half. Teck Resources (TSX: TECK.A, TECK.B)(NYSE: TECK), Canada’s largest diversified miner, saw its copper production jump by 74% in the first three months of the year, thanks mainly to the ramp up of the extension at its Quebrada Blanca (QB) mine in Chile. The Vancouver-based miner churned out 99,000 tonnes in the first quarter, with QB producing 43,300 tonnes. QB2, as the new area of the mine is known, began production three years after originally planned, due to weather and covid-19 construction disruptions. In the process, the key growth project saw costs balloon. Teck n ..read more
