If there is one thing that having a number of children has taught me, it is that you have to partner with those you choose to walk the path of raising your child with. You have to be comfortable with those who you choose to allow to guide your family as it relates to your child’s health. If your child has special needs, like my 6th does, this valuable partnership becomes even more evident. So, how do you choose your child’s doctor or specialist? Have Confidence The first thing you have to do is be confident. A parent who is not confident that they know their child better than anyone else will ..read more

From the first kiss of air on your skin to the moment you reached my arms felt like a life time. I finally saw you outside of my body and all I could think was “That is my baby, that is my baby, that is MY BABY.” I was flooded with thoughts, emotions, and hormones like the sweetest roller coaster ride. I grabbed your squishy, messy body with both hands and pulled you tight onto my chest. Captivated, speechless, so in love. Time stood still as I took in all of your beauty. I held you tight and stroked your head. We were in our own world, just you and me. Looking over your whole body I realized ..read more

Whether the parents have learned before birth or at that precious, emotional, and chaotic time just after a baby is born, a Down Syndrome diagnosis can be paralyzing to a parent.  There are so many emotions that course through the hearts of these parents that often they themselves don’t know which to latch on to.  There are feelings of fear, disbelief, denial, hope, and for some, even rejection.  The parents you once knew as strong and poignant can turn into puddles of salty tears with just one wrongly spoken word, be careful, you can be walking through a minefield. Here is t ..read more

A Son with Down Syndrome- a Father’s Pride & Joy
Cedars Story

One of my favorite kinds of stories to share on this blog is the perspective that comes from dads. It is rare, in fact, we only have about 6 stories on the blog written by the all important dads, but they are so much more powerful than most fathers realize. I first became aquainted with Shawn when he purchased some jewelry from our 6arrowsdesigns website and his natural desire to advocate for his son led me to ask for his story. Shawn beams with pride and joy when telling of his son . A son with Down Syndrome, one father’s pride and joy. In October of 2014 we found out we were going to be pa ..read more

I love this story so much, I love Julie, and her heart that she shares with us all as she wrestled not only with her fears of Down Syndrome but also of whether she and her husband would be able to parent the twins they were expecting, fraternal twins with Down Syndrome. I was 43. I had three kids from my first marriage and my second husband and I had one darling, blond haired, blue eyed boy just a year old. We wanted just one more and not so secretly hoped for a little sister for our son. One just as “perfect,” one that would bring us all the pride and joy we could imagine. I pined for little ..read more

Breastfeeding can be hard work.  This is true under the best of circumstances as it requires patience, time, and a concerted effort.  When you have a child born with Down Syndrome, the patience, time and concerted effort are just magnified a bit more. However, breastfeeding a baby with Down syndrome can be successfully done by keeping just a few things in mind to help. When you have a new baby, and a desire to breastfeed there are always obstacles.  Most babies, when given a chance, will learn to nurse well.  There are of course a few exceptions, and with special ne ..read more

Infantile Spasms and Down Syndrome
Cedars Story

I had a mother reach out to me and suggest that a topic I might want to explore on the site was the topic of Infantile Spasms and Down Syndrome. I am in a number of facebook groups for parents of children with Down Syndrome and this was not a term unfamiliar to me, however, the extensive research that would be done by a mom in this situation was not something I was yet familiar with.  That’s when I did what I do best…I asked a mom to tell her story. Let me start by introducing the term: Infantile spasms (IS) is a rare seizure disorder that occurs in young children, usually under one ..read more
