2023: #16 Fairleigh Dickinson vs #1 Purdue (63-58 First Round) Fairleigh Dickinson made it to the tournament due to a technicality. They lost the NEC Championship game to top-seeded Merrimack but because Merrimack was in a transition period from Division II to Division I they were ineligible for the Big Dance so the Knights received the conference’s automatic bid. 2022: #15 St. Peter’s vs #2 Kentucky (85-79 OT First Round) The Peacocks earned an automatic bid to the tournament by winning their conference (MAAC) championship led by head coach Shaheen Holloway. The 15-seeded St. Peter’s kept up with powerhouse #2 Kentucky in a game that had 16 ties and 13 lead changes. Clutch shooting by Holloway’s squad kept it close. St. Peter’s finished the game 18 of 21 (86%) from the free throw line and 9 of 17 (53%) from behind the arch. 2021: #11 UCLA vs #11 Michigan St (86-80 OT First Four) UCLA limped into the Big Dance with a 17-9 record and a four game losing streak. The Bruins trailed the Spartans by 11 points (33-44) at halftime but a strong 2nd half got them back in the game. UCLA found themselves down by 3 (74-77) with 37 seconds left and Jamie Jaquez Jr at the free throw line. Jaquez missed his free throw but got the rebound and completed a 3 point play a few seconds later to tie the game and send it to overtime. Well, it’s that time of year again. Selection Sunday is less than 3 weeks away as conference play enters it’s final stretch of games. Only 4 teams have been ranked #1 throughout the year (Alabama, Houston, Purdue, UNC) with one those teams (UNC) struggling of late and currently on the Bubble. This year’s tournament has proven to be another dandy thus far. Defending Champion Baylor, gone. Top seeded Gonzaga, gone. Pac-12 Champions Arizona, gone. The list goes on and on. Some of the biggest bracket busters came in the first round with the #15 St. Peter’s Peacocks defeating heavily favored #2 Kentucky Wildcats. The #12 Richmond Spiders made good on their stolen bid by beating #5 Iowa Hawkeyes who were rolling having won 9 of 10 and the B1G Tournament entering the Big Dance. Championship Week will be finishing up this weekend as more teams earn their automatic bids to the Big Dance. Some of those teams to already punch their ticket include: Gonzaga, Murray St, Loyola Chicago, South Dakota State and Chattanooga. The Selection Committee will have their hands full as a few Bubble teams make a desperate attempt to save their season.
