Kubernetes has become the de facto way of deploying modern applications, this requires maintaining configuration files in order to deploy. One of the biggest challenges is storing and giving these applications the secrets they need to run. At VMware’s Cloud Services Engagement Platform we prioritize security and go the extra mile to make our microservices more secure and less vulnerable. What is a secret?  “A Secret is an object that contains a small amount of sensitive data such as a password, a token, or a key. Such information might otherwise be put in a Pod specification or ..read more

Kubernetes 1.22 – Reaching New Peaks

I was a Release Lead Shadow on the Kubernetes 1.22 release team and we had another successful Kubernetes release on August 4. We’re pleased to announce that Kubernetes 1.22 brings 53 enhancements this cycle—13 stable, 24 to beta, and 16 new alpha features. Probably the most impactful change to users in the 1.22 release is the removal of deprecated APIs. As part of the API deprecation policy, APIs can no longer remain in “perma-beta” and must either reach GA or release a new beta version—meaning that some releases will include the removal of APIs, including some still widely used APIs. All Kube ..read more

A Guide to FinOps for Kubernetes

Flexibility is one of Kubernetes’ greatest strengths, but it can become a weakness if left unmanaged. The decentralized nature and rapid scale of the public cloud can easily lead to cloud spending that exceeds expectations and actual needs. Organizations struggle not only with overspending, but also with evaluating cloud spend accurately and efficiently. This is especially true with Kubernetes due to the complexity and scale of Kubernetes cloud costs.   As organizations mature their cloud strategies, they frequently look to optimize their cloud spending. Clo ..read more

In our most recent podcast, Eric Nielsen (@ericnpro) and I (@djasso7494) sat down with Lee Caswell, VP of VMware’s Cloud Platform Business Unit.  Lee’s business unit is responsible for VMware Cloud Foundation, a complete cloud stack (compute, storage, networking and management) that runs in the datacenter, on the edge, on thousands of managed service provider partner environments and now on the hyper-scaler cloud environments of AWS, Azure, Google, IBM, Oracle and Alibaba. State of Cloud:  Laws of Physics, Economics and Land Our interview with Lee was far ranging.  Lee started ..read more

Financial Operations (FinOps) is becoming more relevant than ever for I&O organizations that are moving towards cloud. When moving towards a cloud operating model it is necessary to provide the consumers of the platform with the right information when it comes to the associated cost of the consumed services. This is where FinOps comes into play. FinOps is the part that deals with Cloud Financial Management. It is a cultural practice that makes sure that consumers of the platform are aware of the associates costs. Next to that FinOps teams take care of the making the costs visible within th ..read more

In the previous blog post we spoke about the fact that Kubernetes is “just another thing to manage”. That is the case for cloud architects and operators that are responsible for providing Kubernetes as an endpoint within the clouds they are managing. Alongside other cloud services that the business needs. In this blog post we will look at the most common use cases that are relevant for cloud architects to consider when creating cloud services that provide Kubernetes to the consumers of the cloud platform. One thing to point out is the fact that these use cases are specifically targeted for ena ..read more

Race Ahead to Kubernetes: A Learning Path for System Administrators

Kubernetes has quickly emerged as one of the leading cloud technologies—and for good reason. Kubernetes makes it possible to deploy modern applications that are scalable, modular, and fault-tolerant. You declare the state you need your environment to be in and it constantly works to maintain that state, which frees up teams from manual tasks around infrastructure management. While Kubernetes has been popular with developers for a number of years, it’s now moving steadily into production environments and well on its way to entering the IT mainstream. In fact, our latest research shows that 74 ..read more
