Crochet, car shoes, the anatomy of a spring outfit

Hey, how was your week? What have you been thinking about lately? What have you been wearing? I got a leather jacket from that French brand I included in the last Letter of Rec and can confirm it’s good. Rigid but worn leather set on a silhouette that is not overwhelming in size, or conversely, too precious. Antivol Paris jacket 9/10 recommend if you’re after one (falls at a good place on the hips too), with one point docked because I wish the pockets (which sit near the ribs) were a little easier to access and use. Meanwhile, the weather gave me a nice lift on Monday/Tuesday, did you get ..read more

This edition of The Cereal Aisle is brought to you by Adina Reyter, an L.A.-based fine jewelry brand that specializes in customization. VISIT CAFE LEANDRA FOR MORE The objective of wearing jewelry as I understand it is two-fold. You wear it for sentimentality (it’s an easy way to show your love for the people you care for most — either because you’re decorated by qualities that belong to them: Here for example are two signet rings commemorating the zodiac signs of Taurus (Abie) and Pisces (my daughters) stacked one on top of each other  Or because they’ve either been passed down or beca ..read more

Can Keens sneakers be cool?

The spring equivalent of a pair of hiking boots could be a pair of sneakers that have laces that start at the very top of the shoe. Charlie (who shoots the pictures that are not living-room-selfies for this newsletter) pointed out that for Keen’s ‘Jasper’ style in particular, which either fall into the category of so-bad-they’re-good or plain-old-bad, what’s interesting and in a way sort of mesmerizing is that they look like a bit like baseball mitt. New sets to shop here They kind of remind me of the perfect Dries sneaker I called attention to on Fri. I think I get what she means. And am in ..read more

Toe cleavage becomes us

I have been thinking a lot about creative work — about the kind of people who do creative work and the processes they develop around it. For a while I’ve been thinking that I’m craving a break, not because of burn out or a lack of energy or even because I’m dead on ideas but because I’m curious to see what else is here: what new expressions of creativity want to reveal themselves. More long form, more food pairings, physical production? You can know with your gut that something else wants to get out of you, but it’s hard to know what when you’re in a tunnel of routine. Which makes me wonder, t ..read more

Hi! My second collaboration with Soeur launched today. It features 8 pieces — a dress, a skirt, a logo tank and underwear (to be worn as pants), a polo, lightweight cotton pants, suede mary-janes and a silver pouch/bag. You can see and shop the complete range here. I just have like 3 (5) notes on the collection more broadly. A behind the scenes iPhone photo taken by Danielle McKernan on shoot day a couple weeks ago. There were actual buckets of water descending from the sky but that did not stop us from finding a reason to omit pants in the public domain The sheer mini dress (named after m ..read more

Outfit ideas for limbo weather

You know what I realized last week is that there are only like 4-5 months a year when getting dressed feels genuinely fresh — like when it invokes the kind of broad energy that has even those who don’t think about what to wear, thinking about what to wear. Visit CAFE LEANDRA For the more obsessive among us, the outfits that usually sprout from this sprint can be classified as “fashion outfits” — looks that make limited practical sense (think bare legs with a turtleneck, socks and sandals, a tank top with wool pants) but feel great on. Skall Studios turtleneck (the color is the main thing - t ..read more

Piece-led Fashion vs. Vibe-led Fashion

I had the wildest dream the other night that I had agreed to participate in this study where a scientist who looked a lot like Smith Jarrod (wearing a plaid leather apron) would inject a gigantic needle into a vein in my arm and slowly drain my body of its blood. Somehow it had not occurred to me in the dream, or actually I think I did occur to me, but I was numb, that participating in this study meant ending my life but by the time I was ready to make good on my commitment, I woke up (not literally) and started screaming and yelling and crying at the top of my lungs that I wasn’t ready for th ..read more

When the weather is changing and you're not sure what to wear

I think I’ve been going too fast. Last week, I showed up at a studio in midtown for what I thought was going to be a podcast recording but in fact turned out to be a cable tv-programming recording. My pace occurred to me then. This symptom — of not reading emails closely enough or of responding to something before I fully understand the ask/commitment/statement — is usually a much later tell that I’ve been going too fast. The first symptom is always disconnection from my body, but the tricky thing here is that I usually don’t know I’ve been disconnected from my body until I can reconnect to it ..read more
