Ending the Year with an Empty Shelter, and a New Vet Clinic on the Way

As 2023 comes to a close in two days, LHS will leave the sheltering facility we have called home and relocate operations to a mobile veterinary clinic, opening in January of 2024. And as of today at noon, all LHS animals will have been adopted, transferred, or placed into foster care. No LHS animals will remain in the shelter. As I say those words, I let out a big sigh or relief. Ensuring the placement of all LHS’ animals was our number one priority during this transition, and we are so grateful for your support in having made that future a reality. Behind the scenes LHS has been focused on ye ..read more

A Holiday Gift for Zap

Zap was found abandoned on a porch in Jersey City, in the heat of summer. Zap was skinny and so afraid she could barely be touched. When Zap was brought to LHS’ clinic medical staff realized she was missing most of her teeth and needed extensive dental care. They also noted she was pregnant. The next day Zap gave birth to six puppies. Zap and her family stayed in the care of our shelter for months. Zap’s puppies grew healthy and strong with mom; were socialized by staff; and grew to be happy, well-adjusted puppies. When the time came for adoption they found homes immediately. Zap had the dent ..read more

Announcement: The Future of LHS

Dear Supporters, Colleagues, and Friends, I have difficult news to share.  On October 2nd, 2023 the City of Jersey City informed Liberty Humane Society (LHS) that they would be ending our contractual agreement to provide animal control services, effective October 31st, 2023. The abrupt ending to our animal control agreement left LHS unable to appropriately fund or manage Jersey City’s animal sheltering program and facility. The termination of these agreements also invalidates the LHS lease for 235 Jersey City Boulevard, which is owned by the City of Jersey City but has been solely operate ..read more

UPDATE: Sample the Severely-Burned Dog

This was our first introduction to a dog named Sample: A call came into our Animal Response Team (ART) from a concerned resident about a dog left in a crate without food or water. When our Officer arrived they found a dog with severe chemical burns on more than half of his body, and a Police Officer on scene. Our ART Officer carefully bundled up Sample and rushed him to an emergency clinic. He was sedated while his wounds were cleaned and assessed – Sample was stable, but he was going to need daily treatment and bandage changes for at least a month to avoid infection and ultimately recover. Committed to every animal: a kitten named Rosani and four months of rabies quarantine

When he was just a 12-week-old kitten, Rosani’s brother tested positive for rabies, exposing Rosani and several well-meaning people who had taken them in from outdoors. We know, that’s quite a lead-in for a newsletter story – it gets better! Although rabies is very uncommon in outdoor cats in our area, it is always present at low levels in warm-blooded mammals who circulate outdoors. This is why vaccinating cats and dogs against rabies is essential, and why all municipalities in NJ require dogs to be licensed. Rosani was definitely exposed to rabies, but she wasn’t sick. Usually the disease m ..read more

Meeting Every Dog Where They Are: In Conversation with Pankaj from LHS' Dog Behavior team

The one thing every shelter dog needs is understanding. LHS Animal Attendant and dog training lead Pankaj Kapoor knows that firsthand. Join us for a conversation about Pankaj’s shelter role and the importance of giving dogs what they need in order to truly thrive.  What first got you interested in working with dogs? My animal experiences actually start with a semi-feral cat I adopted long before I worked at LHS. She was a challenge, to say the least, but the more I worked with her, the more I saw her change. I realized that training is always happening, whether you’re aware of it or not ..read more

Espanol Aqui The ASPCA and Subaru are sponsoring three free spay/neuter days for Jersey City outdoor cats! If you're caring for an outdoor cat in Jersey City or know someone who is, now is the time to take action to stop the breeding cycle and help us get ahead of next year's mating season. Each cat you spay or neuter prevents at least one litter of kittens from ending up in a shelter or rescue situation. Just imagine: up to 6 fewer kittens to house, care, and find homes for--with just one intervention involving one cat! Spay/neuter is profoundly more impactful than any other action you can t ..read more
