Hopes of the UK government meeting its domestic and international climate targets have “worsened” over the past year, according to the Climate Change Committee (CCC).
Its new progress report marks the latest in a series of annual updates, in which the CCC has repeatedly admonished the government for failing to take the action needed to reach its net-zero goals.
It comes in the wake of a High Court ruling that forced the government to provide a far more detailed explanation of how it intends to achieve its legally binding climate targets.
However, rather than setting the nation on a course to h ..read more

Fast-rising concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are the main driver of human-caused global warming.
Working out how to reduce these emissions is a cornerstone of international climate negotiations.
However, unlike some other forms of pollution, this greenhouse gas is invisible to the human eye. This makes it harder to communicate the challenge of global warming to the public.
But dramatic new visualisations by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration – better known as NASA – show CO2 emissions build up in the atmosphere over the course of a year.
The videos show CO2 ..read more

Africa is uniquely vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, tens of millions of Africans are already feeling the negative health impacts of climate change, in the form of heat stress, extreme weather and increased transmission of infectious disease.
However, research on the continent faces severe challenges due to a lack of funding and access to data.
Last week, a range of stakeholders – academics from both climate science and health science, as well as policymakers, humanitarian workers and more – gathered at the Amer ..read more

Women play a critical role in biodiversity conservation.
Globally, their contributions range from agricultural labour and working on nature reserves through to running environmental organisations and crafting international policies.
However, women who are dedicated to protecting biodiversity face violence.
According to a 2020 report from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which surveyed more than 300 men and women who worked in sectors with close ties to conservation, 59% of the women respondents had observed some form of violence while carrying out environmen ..read more

The UK would need less imported gas by 2030 under pledges made by the opposition Labour Party, than under the Conservative government’s current plans, new Carbon Brief analysis shows.
Labour has pledged, if elected, to end new drilling licences for North Sea oil and gas, leading to accusations from government ministers that it would “make the UK reliant on tyrants” due to increased gas imports.
But the pledge on new oil and gas licences is not the only part of Labour’s plans.
Labour has also pledged to decarbonise the UK’s electricity system by 2030 – five years earlier than the curr ..read more

Climate negotiations kicked off once again this month in the German city of Bonn, as diplomats from around the world searched for common ground before the next big UN summit COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Developing countries had scored a “win” six months earlier at COP27 in Egypt when they secured a “loss-and-damage fund” for people struck by climate disasters.
At Bonn, delegates were tasked with laying the groundwork ahead of a “global stocktake” that will see nations assessing their progress towards climate goals. Their schedules were also packed with the various workshops and ..read more
