Although burn injuries do not rank among the most common veterinarians encounter in their practices, they may see more of them in coming years. Wildfires are occurring more frequently, and summers are becoming hotter, increasing the risk of dogs burning their paws on hot asphalt and cement. In addition to wildfires, burn injuries can be caused by house fires, outdoor fires, caustic chemicals, scalding water, electrical injuries, hot radiators, side effects of radiation treatment, and other situations where animals come into contact with fire or extreme heat. No matter the cause, just as with ..read more

The August 2023 Maui fires killed more than 100 people, destroyed over 2,200 structures and caused about $5.5 billion in damage on the Valley Isle of Hawaii, according to a preliminary after-action report by the United States Fire Administration. But humans were not the only ones impacted by the blazes. Padgie Kimmick, founder of Cat Care Durango, a cat adoption agency and sanctuary on Suttle Street in south Durango, traveled to Maui last week to take 12 cats off the hands of the Maui Humane Society. Kimmick said Cat Care Durango did not do a “gigantic deed” by bringing a dozen cats back to t ..read more

The Maui Humane Society continues to seek caretakers for displaced cats from the 2023 Lahaina wildfire. The organization has more than 50 outdoor community fire cats in its care, and is seeking to find new homes for them through the Operation Fire Cat Placement Program. MHS says all that is needed is an outdoor place, and the organization will cover all expenses during the acclimation period. Through OFCPP, MHS’ Fire Cat Specialists build a “catio” on the caretaker’s property to house 2-3 outdoor fire cats. The caretaker will then feed, care for, and monitor the cats over a 3-4 week accl ..read more

Aloha kakou, my name is Pitufina and I am Maui Humane Society’s Pet of the Week! I am a survivor of the tragic Lahaina fires. I no longer have a home to go back to, so now I am in search of a new home to call my own. When I first came to the shelter, I was shy and scared, but with time, I’ve blossomed into my true self! Now, I can’t get enough of gentle pets and I love to rub up on you to show my affection. Playing with toys is one of my favorite pastimes – there’s just something about batting around a toy that brings me joy. I’ve had a rough few months, but I’m resilient and ready to embrace ..read more

More than seven months after wildfires burned through more than 2,000 acres in Lahaina, Maui, the island continues to rebuild. But the process is slow, with about 5,000 Maui residents still displaced. And they aren’t the only ones: 3,000 animals also lost their homes at a time when Maui’s Humane Society was already overwhelmed. Since the fires, officials at the shelter estimate it’s taken in more than 800 animals, which staff and volunteers are struggling to feed and care for. Shelter workers say monetary donations help, but there’s also another way to pitch in: walki ..read more

Aloha kakou, my name is JT and I am Maui Humane Society’s Pet of the Week! My story began when I was found as a stray, crying and chained to a tree with some wounds. Some nice people found me & brought me to the shelter to get all healed up and to find a Ohana of my own. I love car rides, the beach, walks, hikes, treats, affection, toys – you name it! Plus, I’m great with kids and everyone I meet. Call me a goofy dude with a heart of gold! I’m not a fan of shelter life, it makes me feel lonely and sad. All I really want is to be by your side, soaking up all the love and attention. So, if ..read more

A paw-fect reunion. Earlier this week, the Maui Humane Society in Hawaii reunited a cat with her owners after she was displaced by the wildfires that occurred in the area last year. The cat, named Mahina, was found by the organization after surviving 100 days in the burn zone, the Maui Humane Society said in a post shared on Facebook. Per the group, Mahina’s family was relocated to Hawaii’s mainland after the natural disaster, where they filed a missing pet report to find their feline friend. But, as they later moved miles away to Montana, they lost hope of ever reuniting ..read more
