YC&AC’s own Motoko T. is representing Japan at the 15th Asian Lawn Bowls Championships currently being held in Pattaya, Thailand. Motoko will be playing in the Women’s Triples and Fours teams. We’ll try to keep you posted on Motoko’s progress by updating this page when we can. The status on the evening of Day 2, March 6, is that Japan’s women’s triples team lost their first game yesterday, against Malaysia, by a score of 10-19, but won today’s match, against Hong Kong, 15-12. And here is the evidence! I don’t have all the stats at my disposal, but it seems that if Japan’s women beat Sri ..read more

Eight teams contested the 2023 Closing Day Tournament, a two-end, three-wood, round-robin triples slugfest that produced some absolutely incredible bowls. You’d think with that super-short format we’d end up with a mess of ordinary W/D/L results, but in fact there are clear and outright winners of this tournament every year. This season’s champions won 6 out of their 7 games and no one can possibly argue with that. So congratulations once again to 2023 Closing Day Tournament winners Tom, Yuko and Ed, and thanks once again also to prize sponsors Ishu and the Ishiguros for the wine and nuts. Th ..read more

YC&AC hosted the 2023 Bowls Japan Women’s Pairs finals on the weekend of September 23 & 24. Inclement weather made the opening day heavy work for those not familiar with bowling on grass, but Sunday saw clear skies, warm weather and some really hot, competitive bowls! Eight pairs in all took part, six from the Kansai region and two from Kanto. Representing YC&AC were Yuko Sasaki (lead) and Yoko Ishiguro (skip). Yuko and Yoko did just enough to finish second in Group A, and thus played the winners of Group B in the semi-final — the two times former champions Koyama (LC Kyoto) & ..read more

Terry Potticary’s remarkable winning start to the 2023 season continued on August 26 with victory alongside Ed Usuda in the Bowls Japan Kanto Region Men’s Pairs. Ed & Terry made light of defeat in Round One and rallied to win all of their remaining games — two of them with come-from-behind three-point last-end finishes. Talk about “never say die”!  The victory cost Terry (Kanto Singles Champion) his second beer tower of the season and Ed his first (thank you both!), but the twosome will head to Kobe later this year full of confidence in their combination and with the best w ..read more

Team D Wins 2023 Sunday Morning League

The Sunday Morning League is the thickly sliced “bread and butter” of lawn bowls at YC&AC, a simple and nourishing モーニングセット of a tournament that lasts for as long as it takes. This year 18 bowlers lined up for breakfast, so we formed six triples teams, meaning five rounds of toast in total. The entry level “morning set” at Pronto (via pronto.co.jp) Going into the fifth and final round, all but one team had a chance of finishing second or third and claiming a small cash return on their investment, but there could only be one winner. The weather forecast was for drizzle and light rain in the morning clearing at noon just in time for the 12:30 start of the Opening Day Tournament.
