Going back to school with life experience “has been the best gift that I could give myself,” says Keegan Metheringham, who is pursuing a long-standing interest in architecture at Carleton University.
“It gives me a sense of purpose and a sense of wonder — ‘where can I go with this? where can it take me?’ It motivates me every day. It’s like a force I’ve never really felt.”
Keegan dropped out of high school more than 20 years ago. After working in the bike industry and construction, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies in 2023 at Vancouver Island University.

While studying geography at the University of British Columbia, Daphne Stams found herself drawn to both cartography and research about urban space organization.
“Although I was able to interact with these fields through quantitative and qualitative research, geography lacked creative visual analysis and often focused on sweeping geographic scales,” she recalls. “I gravitated toward architecture because it combined my interests by visually addressing physical and social spaces on more intimate scales.”

Filipe Costa completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies at the University of Toronto in 2020, with a specialization in technology and a minor in Visual Studies. He has also worked as a design intern, printmaker, and art handler.

During his undergraduate years, Josh Wallace studied theatre set design, psychology, anthropology, and geology. He also had a background in music and woodworking. “I considered majoring in each as I enjoyed them all very much,” he recalls.
Discovering that architecture combined all his interests in one practice, Wallace decided architecture would be the next step. Sarah Fahmy knew early in her life that she wanted to design. Discovering where and how to direct her talent and energy has prompted a journey through interior design, environmental design, and finally architecture.
Growing up in the United Arab Emirates and then Burlington, ON, Fahmy enjoyed re-imagining spaces in the home. “Once I found out interior design existed as a job, my mind was set.” She completed an Advanced Diploma Interior Design at Sheridan College in 2010.

"I found architecture in sort of a roundabout way," says Emma Rath. "I was never gifted in math, so from an early age, I assumed architecture was off the table for me."
Emma, 24, had been pursuing her interdisciplinary interests in multiple ways. In 2020, she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Interdisciplinary Art and a minor in Print, Paper, and Book from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University (NSCAD).
