I recently visited a friend who is an amateur pilot. During a tour of his plane he walked me through its capabilities and some of the safety features. He noted that many of the more expensive models have the technology to fly themselves, to include hands-free landing. As we drove away, I asked if there had been any mishaps at the airpark since he’d moved in. He pointed toward the highway and said a pilot mistook the roadway for the runway, nearly putting it down among vehicle traffic before making a hard, last-minute recovery. I asked why the safety features did not prevent the pilot from the ..read more

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

“Hit the sack,” “catch some z’s” and “forty winks” are just a few ways to refer to sleep.  Some phrases have origins that may surprise you.  Many people believe that telling someone to “sleep tight” recalls a time when beds were supported by ropes, however, back then “tightly” meant “soundly” or “properly.”  To “sleep tight” was to sleep well. There is a decidedly darker origin to the word “nod,” as in “nod off” or go to “the land of nod.”  It is tied to Genesis 4 and Cain’s murderous violence against his brother.  After exposing his crime, Cain’s senten ..read more

Independent, Yet In Dependence

From birth, children are nurtured toward independence.  Babies are taught words before learning to crawl and then walk.  Adolescents are coached about the kind of friends to make and, ideally, young adults are trained to manage their own finances in preparation of becoming a fully-functioning, independent, contributing member of society. Of course some family situations require their children to become independent at a particularly young age.  An adolescent daughter may serve as a mother to her younger siblings, forcing her to be much more self-sufficient than others her age.&nb ..read more

Eternal Pragmatism

In Revolutionary War reenactments I’m struck by scenes that depict a disciplined row of red-coated British soldiers conspicuously marching across an open field to engage in an armed conflict.  With neither cover nor concealment, they act and dress like a human target!  Meanwhile, the New England colonial militia wore plain colored, loose clothing suitable for hunting.  The impracticality of a military tactic that will almost certainly lead to death is perplexing. America is proud of its roots in pragmatism and, to this day, is one of the engines that drives American culture.&nbs ..read more

A Stewardship Audit

The United States Government Services Administration (GSA) is responsible for streamlining and reducing government spending.  In 2010 they held a conference outside of Las Vegas for 299 of its employees.  It was later discovered that the cost of the event exceeded $800,000.  A government oversight committee reported that the executive that selected the site spent $130,000 visiting hotels and planning the conference.  In addition to hiring a clown and a mind reader, some enjoyed rooms that topped $1,000 per night. Does that kind of waste bother ..read more

According to the National Center for Education Statistics about 80 percent of college students change their major at least once.  Of those that graduate with a bachelor’s degree only 27 percent get a job “closely related to their major.”  I’ve seen this firsthand. One of my sons had an interest in health since he was young.  When deciding his course of study, nearly all of the factors related to his desire to know more about the human body.  He was frequently thinking about how to help others lead physically healthier lives and would even talk about how to design ..read more

What Not To Wear

Debuting in 2003, “What Not To Wear” was a reality makeover television show that aired for 10 years.   The premise was that people mistakenly dressed in ways that made them look bad because they were ignorant of what clothing styles complemented their age, body type and profession.  Armed with the personalized coaching of a fashion professional, the participant would be sent shopping with a gift card in hand and a camera crew in-tow. A biblical parallel is found in Titus 2:10 where Christians are told they look their best when they “adorn the doctrine of God our Savior ..read more

The Anatomy of True Repentance

When a mother witnesses her child selfishly snatch a toy from his friend, she leaps to restore order and makes two demands, “Give it back” and “Tell him you’re sorry.”  The first instruction is a matter of restitution.  The offending child must make his friend whole again by returning the item taken.  The second, however, is more nuanced.  In one respect the mother is teaching her child how to conform to social norms.  Young or old, you are expected to apologize when you’ve done something wrong.  For most moms, however, that’s only a ..read more

The Pollyanna Gospel

Authored in 1913, Pollyanna was a novel by Eleanor Porter that was made into a play, four movie adaptations, a TV movie, a TV series, a musical and a Brazilian telenovela!  It was even the origin of a Parker Brothers board game, The Glad Game, produced for over 40 years. The story is about an orphan girl with an irrepressibly positive attitude that visits her ill-humored aunt (against her wishes).  Pollyanna’s optimism in the face of hardship overcame the disagreeable temperament of an entire town.  One of her tactics was to play something she learned from he ..read more

While with the police department I worked on a DUI squad.  During a multi-agency task force my team coordinated with several other police departments to provide added enforcement to a particular part of the city.  The various agencies co-located their resources to form a temporary command post where dozens of police officers processed those that had been arrested.  Each agency had tables set up outside of their respective command vehicles where the initial portion of the processing would take place. One particular night was very busy with every seat taken at our t ..read more
