Look in the Light

Have you ever tried looking for something in the dark?  Even though I know it’s foolish, I do this from time to time.  I’ll walk into a dark room and feel around for some object that I know is there—no need to turn on the light for two seconds—and I feel my way toward the nightstand or the counter or the ottoman. The object is there, but (surprise!) I can’t find it. I turn on the light, and, bam, there it is.  I do the same thing when I plunge my hand into my dark purse and try to find a pen or a hair tie. The desired object is nowhere to be found until I spill the contents in ..read more

Don’t Underestimate Prayer

Before I was baptized and turned my life over to God, I couldn’t keep a job. I have had at least nine jobs over the past eight years, and most of them only lasted a few months. Some a few weeks. A couple no more than a few days.  I would get in my head at work and get anxious around people. I would be so nervous that I would walk out the front door and never come back. It would frustrate me because I wanted to do something with my life, but I felt like I had no chance. Then, one day, I started a job waiting tables, and, as usual, I was nervous and awkward and fumbled around while screwi ..read more

A Closer Look at the Songs of Zion: Come Before Winter

While many of us have a favorite hymn from the beautifully inspired hymns of praise that have touched our hearts and brought tears to our eyes, The Songs of Zion are unique to our Church. They are songs that belong to a new time; they belong to a new era; they belong to our people. They are songs sent from the throne of God as a gift to The Church of Jesus Christ. They are inspirational and related to Christ and His promises of the latter-day times and events. This gift was given to our late Sister Arlene Buffington, as our songs of hope and joy, looking forward to the fulfillment of the kin ..read more

The spring of 2012, DTE Energy (our local energy company) sent our neighborhood letters that they would be moving all of our electrical posts from one side of the street to another, so we were getting a nice huge electrical post on our side of the street right in our lawn.  Needless to say, all of the neighbors on the “receiving a new electrical post” side of the street were not very happy. There was a lot of complaining and disappointment that summer when the new posts were installed. They dug up lawns, sidewalks and driveways all along our street and it was a loud obnoxious mess for th ..read more

About 20 years ago when I was working at a hospital, God spared me from a tornado.  It was a long day at work, which started about two hours before my normal tour of duty. I was in charge of a patient event that very hot summer day and found myself exhausted around 4 p.m. I was supposed to be on the job for another 30 minutes, but the rains had begun, and I wanted to get home before the weather got worse.  To exit the hospital grounds, I needed to drive around the building that I worked in and exit through the gate onto the road. As I was approaching the gate, something that appeare ..read more

Today’s story comes from the pages of the Detroit Branch 1 history. This is an experience given to Brother Antonio Molisani in the early 1920s when the saints of Detroit worked together to construct a church building on Hall and Devine Streets.  None of us were financially comfortable. In fact, most of us were either on welfare or out of work, and we all had big families. But somehow the money came in as we were building our church.  When it was time to buy the windows, each member was asked to contribute $10. I was out of work at that time. One day, as I was walking home from Broth ..read more

Do you need a new fridge?

Written by Sister Denise DiFalco-Dickson My spouse and I had used all of our finances to buy our first home, a place we needed with a newborn. Everything fell into place and all the doors had opened for us to obtain it, so we were sure that the Lord was in the matter.  A few months after we had moved in, I noticed that the refrigerator was on the blink. My daughter’s formula was spoiling, and we were not in a position to afford a new appliance at that time.  I remember immediately going to the living room and kneeling down in prayer. I told the Lord that I did not want to burden my ..read more

The First Baptism in Guatemala

In May of 1988, the initial baptisms took place at the mission in Guatemala City. During the baptisms, several people witnessed a man dressed very humbly, without shoes, standing at the waters’ edge. He was touched by the baptisms and was weeping uncontrollably. He helped dry each of the new converts as they came out of the water.  Following the baptisms he disappeared from the crowd. A woman who was on her way to witness the baptisms arrived late. As she was driving a few yards from the water, the man dressed humbly approached her car. She looked at him — his eyes reflected peacefulness ..read more

What Happens to Us After We Die?

“And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:26) I believe it was in 1977 when I lost my unborn baby, Amy. She died after I carried her for five and half months. I entered the hospital and was given an injection to induce labor. I went into full labor and hit the call button. A nurse came in to check on me. She watched as Amy left me and then took her away. She returned only to find me hemorrhaging.  At 2 a.m., Brother Michael LaSala, an elder in our church, heard a voice telling him to go pray for me. He left the assembly line at work, entere ..read more
