Thanks to everyone who came to our open house a little over a week ago. Cookies were eaten (here’s the recipe for the peanut butter miso ones, though I added more peanut butter), a mural was painted, and chatting abounded. John Schaefer of Early Winters Studios was around to answer questions about his beautiful mountain photography, and we were thrilled to show everyone our new space. A massive thank you to Janet Fagen, who was instrumental in making the mural project a reality. She generously helped me gather supplies, answered endless questions, and helped everyone who participated free thei ..read more

The Healthy Athlete: Nutrition for Youth
Cascade Endurance Blog
by Alison Naney
6M ago
We’re launching a series of free, monthly community discussions on various topics relating to sport, and we’re excited to have nutrition be our first one. If you have an idea for a talk, please email alison@cascadeendurance.com. We hope to see you at one soon! There’s so much in the media about optimal diets and healthy eating; so much so that it can be challenging to distinguish between thoughtful, research driven information, and food fads and myths. Add in figuring out how to help your young athletes eat well during a time of massive growth, and it’s even harder to know what to do. Join reg ..read more

Join Cascade Endurance coaches Sam Naney and Alan Adams at the CE Fly Shop for a dive into the fine pursuit of skiing uphill. Be it backcountry or sidecountry touring, “uphilling”, or skimo; we’ll cover the similarities and differences in gear, terrain choices*, training methods and more. Part of the clinic will be indoors, exploring considerations in boots, skis and equipment, then we’ll move into the gym and onto the neighboring Mazama trails to survey a few different ways you can prepare yourself physically for maximum enjoyment when snow flies. *Avalanche education won’t be covered here; r ..read more

Hill Workouts
Cascade Endurance Blog
by Alison Naney

Do you do hill workouts? They can be intimidating, and unpleasant…unless you do them with friends! We partnered up with our friends at Winthrop Mountain Sports (did you know Erik was in our wedding?) to make huffing up a hill enjoyable. Well, at least more fun. And knowing that people will be there makes getting out of bed easier. All are welcome to these free workouts. We start out with an easy warm up, then ease our way into the workout. The full run is a little over an hour. We alternate between Mazama and Winthrop, so hopefully you can come to at least one of the locations. Check our Insta ..read more

Zen and the Art of Athlete Maintenance

When I was in my early twenties and training hard for Nordic ski racing, my coach and mentor introduced me to the world of gas-powered speed. He had spent much of his own life driving, riding, and maintaining high-performance engines from ‘60s-era Jaguars to cafe racers from the early British scene of sport bikes. It didn’t take long for that bug to bite down hard, and I soon had in my possession a rather decrepit 1973 Honda CB750 motorcycle, complete with touring boxes and a sizable (dorky) wind fairing. But after spending a year-plus wrenching, learning, fumbling and bruising, with his help ..read more

Running Bites.

I’m quite certain that when Joe Elliot, the esteemed and charismatic frontman of famed 80s rock band Def Leppard, penned the timeless line “Love Bites” for their 1987 banger album “Hysteria”, what he really meant to write was that running bites and it’s painful. Or at least, that’s what went through my mind today when logging my longest run to date this spring (11 whole miles) while LISTENING to “Hysteria”. Because I still listen to that type of music. Un-ironically. OK, running doesn’t really bite. I love running, most of the time, and appreciate all it offers when trails open up and I can g ..read more

Ski -> Run (happily)
Cascade Endurance Blog

Most of the athletes we work with (and mountain athletes in general) enjoy a range of sports through the year, moving from season to season and capitalizing on the best way to move through terrain – on skis, bike, or foot. And while the development of aerobic fitness and strength happens across the board, the specific movement patterns and resilience for each activity need to be adapted anew with each one. Case in point: every winter I try to maintain a handful of running miles each week in order to keep some impact in my legs and make the transition to springtime and higher volume running tha ..read more
