Race Leadville Faster… Without Training More
Consummate Athlete Blog

Success in endurance races like the Leadville 100-mile MTB race isn’t just about logging endless training hours. The race’s challenging terrain and high altitude demand a strategic approach beyond sheer fitness. Leadville Success Without Training More In this article, I’ll focus on everything besides training (though our training plans can help you with that!). For adult cyclists with busy lives finishing Leadville in under 9 or 12 hours presents a very different challenge than an elite cyclist with unlimited time to train and the ability to spend time (or live) at altitude as they finish in c ..read more

Consummate Athlete Blog

Sleeping in an Hypoxico altitude tent Sharing an altitude tent (sorry, altitude cubicle) with a partner is asking a lot of your relationship. Let’s just start right there. If you’re someone living at 0 feet of elevation and planning to race, say, at the 10,000 foot starting point and just going up from there Leadville Trail 100, an altitude tent is a major plus. It allows you to effectively sleep high, train low—and even train high if you use the exercise mask on the trainer or treadmill. And trust me, it is a noticeable difference. Why use an altitude tent? Having raced the Leadville Trail Ma ..read more

In our book, Becoming A Consummate Athlete, and on the podcast, we talk a lot about Rockslide Habits. You may have heard of the idea of ‘big rocks’ in your life… this is taking that concept, just a little bit further. What are rockslide habits? Rockslide habits are the big shifts you can make all at once that set you up for success down the road. These are the pantry cleanouts, the bedroom optimization, that kind of thing—where making one big change will put you on the path to healthier habits. Frankly, to me, they’re the sexy habits because they can have a dramatic before and after picture in ..read more

E-Bikes are Part of a Healthy Aging Strategy
Consummate Athlete Blog

We wanted to pose a question today: What if electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric mountain bikes (e-MTB) could keep you and your friends riding and moving in nature for many more years, compared to deciding you’ll never use one? Hear us out! You do not NEED to get an e-bike today but we encourage you to keep an open mind. E-MTB will keep you moving There are some very good use cases for this developing technology and they are too often dismissed as ‘cheating’ or ‘not a good workout.’ For a variety of reasons–aging, illness, injury–athletes find that there is a point where the effort to complet ..read more

Organizing + Optimizing Your Spring Training “Disorder is our worst enemy.” —Greek poet Hesiod, 700 B.C. Spring is (sort of) here again, and that means spring training and spring cleaning, admittedly two of my favorite things to do and to write about. So, let’s chat spring cleaning for cyclists Pack away deep winter clothes Let’s get the big one out of the way: Get those deep winter clothes stored. That means the ski boots, the big heated gloves, the thermal double-layer tights, the super thic ..read more

Is It Time for a Habit Audit?
Consummate Athlete Blog
by Molly Hurford
3w ago
Today as we recorded this week’s podcast, I was talking about the fact that my knee is experiencing a bit of a tweak these last few days. It’s nothing new or super serious-feeling, but it is serving as a reminder that I can’t take my general health/working legs for granted. To that end, Peter has mentioned using my Normatech compression boots a couple of times. Until right now—as I write this while wearing them—I didn’t listen. But all of that got me thinking about habits, and when we may be in dire need of a habit audit. I used to use the compression boots all the time. I made it a daily habi ..read more

Why You Need a Post-Race Ritual—Even 20 Minutes!
Consummate Athlete Blog

I wrote this thinking about the women in my life that I know. I’ve seen my friends cross the finish line, and before they’ve even caught their breath, they’re back into real life, making sure the kids have snacks and are ready to get home, all while still sweat-soaked. But post-race recovery and actual enjoyment of your racing accomplishment should start long before race day, especially for busy people with demanding jobs and families. Now, because I don’t have kids and I generally can work from anywhere, post-race has never been a major issue for me since I can post up on whatever couch is cl ..read more
