Abundant Housing LA Blog

It was a fairly slow week in housing news. The LA Times had a cute profile of a Chilean- and Ukrainian-American couple who built a pair of ADUs for their aging parents, an update on the Skid Row Housing Trust going bust, and a piece on how higher mortgage interest rates are discouraging would-be home sellers. A new ApartmentList report found that Greater LA permitted 2.5 new homes per 1,000 residents in 2022, down from 2.5 in 2004 and 3.3 in 1990. Further afield, the Builders Remedy has come for Palo Alto, New York governor Hochul’s housing plan continued to rankle the NYC suburbs, and a TikTo ..read more

Here in LA, a new USC study tracked the pollution impacts of driving, finding that Angelenos who drive less are exposed to more pollution. The Times ran an editorial on Mayor Bass’ homelessness record and an op ed in favor of AB 68, the AHLA-endorsed policy to stop sprawl while streamlining infill housing. Further afield, the notorious Terraces at Lafayette project made famous in Golden Gates received its final approvals, Huntington Beach , and Chris Elmendorf questioned the legal basis of San Francisco’s discretionary approvals system. Outside California, Colorado governor Jared Polis propose ..read more

AHLA Endorses Asm. Lee’s Single-Stair Reform Bill
Abundant Housing LA Blog
by Max Dubler

Abundant Housing LA is proud to endorse AB 835, Assemblymember Lee’s single-stair building reform bill. Currently the California Building Code requires apartment buildings over three stories in height to have two exit stairways. While intended to promote safety and facilitate emergency egress, some other countries allow single-stair buildings, above three stories in height and have better fire safety outcomes than the United States. Dual-stair buildings reduce flexibility in building design and make it harder to build housing, particularly family-sized apartments, on narrow lots. AB 835 takes ..read more

Every week, we round up the biggest housing news for the AHLA newsletter (subscribe here) and share them to the blog. The biggest news here in California was the Superior Court’s ruling that UC Berkeley had failed to sufficiently analyze potential noise impacts of the dorm they want to build on so-called People’s Park. The ruling, which essentially states that college students are pollution, provoked immediate backlash from state lawmakers, who introduced a bill to exempt noise and population impacts from CEQA, and Governor Newsom, who called out “NIMBYs who weaponize CEQA” and promised to ref ..read more

Every week, we round up the week’s biggest housing news from around the city, state, and country for the Abundant Housing LA blog. Locally, Huntington Beach continued its long tradition of being loud and wrong about state housing law, this time by challenging their RHNA numbers, passing an ordinance that declares the city exempt from the builders remedy, and refusing to adopt a housing element. AHLA-endorsed Assemblymember Tina McKinnor introduced a bill to ban so-called “crime-free housing” policies that disproportionately harm Black and Latino renters who police suspected were involved in cr ..read more
