7 Epics Ways to Give Back to the Ocean
Christine Lacayo Blog
by Christine Lacayo

Life in the ocean hasn’t been more at risk since an asteroid wiped out half of all life on the planet. With warming oceans, oxygen dead zones, habitat destruction, plastic pollution soups, overfishing, and overexploitation, our ocean is in peril today. Although the ocean is vast, expansive, and all-powerful, it’s also very vulnerable and fragile. We know terribly little about life in the sea, yet the ocean is our life force. It gives us the air we breathe, the food that nourishes our bodies, jobs, and healthy livelihoods, and is a transformative physical and spiritual healing source of inspira ..read more

I shared with my parents a little bocadillo of my plans for my next move. I've been hesitant to tell them because I know the push back I'll get. My mom asked me, "De donde sacas estas locuritas Christinsita”? Where do you get these crazy ideas?  She went on and on about how dangerous it is for me to do what I want to do alone as a woman, and that I need to go with someone, and that the Mexican cartel is going to find me, et. ce. te. ra. I know there is an element of danger going alone to remote places as a woman but I have an intention and a purpose for every single place I have on my lis ..read more

As Catholics, we have a multitude of traditions, devotions, and prayers you can follow throughout your journey with God. One tradition has recently been gaining momentum in the Church: a greater devotion to St. Joseph. St. Joseph has always had a special place in the lives of Christians throughout the centuries, but his increasing importance in the life of the Church encourages us to study and know him better during these unprecedented times. Consecration to St. Joseph basically means you acknowledge that St. Joseph is your spiritual father and that you want to live more like him to grow clos ..read more

My sister, Stephanie, was studying Veterinary Medicine at St. George’s University on the island of Grenada in the West Indies from 2016- 2020. During her 4 years of study there, she had an incredibly difficult time recycling. So much so, that she decided to collect of all of her recyclables in her dorm room and bring them with her every time she flew back to Atlanta for the holidays.  Now, some might say having to take recyclables on a flight defeats the purpose. But hey, at least her intention counts. Not to mention, many small island nations export their recyclables to the mainland to a ..read more

“¡Feliz cumpleaños Christine, que bueno que regresaste!” The Plan 2040 employees warmly welcomed me back with birthday greetings and big hugs.  With it being my second time in this unique desert oasis, I was overwhelmed with gratitude and joy that I was able to make it back for another St. Joseph pilgrimage and this time on my 33rd birthday.  Just 3 hours northeast of Monterrey, Mexico, Cuatro Ciénegas is located in the Chihuahuan Desert and often called the ‘Galapagos of Mexico’ for its abundance of ancient flora and fauna and unique geography holding evidence from the beginnings o ..read more

“He found him in a desert land, in a place of horror, and of vast wilderness. He led him about, and taught him, and he kept him as the apple of his eye.” (Deuteronomy 32:10) As we walk through our lenten journey, we might find ourselves in a dark barren desert that can feel unfamiliar and lonely.  Although I’m just coming out of a physical desert experience from my St. Joseph pilgrimage through the Chihuahuan desert of Cuatro Ciénegas, Mexico, I feel myself still very much sitting in that unknown “desert” place in my heart. A familiar feeling I experienced in 2021 after finishing the Con ..read more

Watching The Cove by Oceanic Preservation Society 12 years ago was what inspired me to become an ocean storyteller and activist for the care and protection of our underwater world. We can’t possibly care for something we don’t know about it. When we learn about it, whether that be through film, books, groups, or studies, we begin to hold passion, love and care for it. When we care about it, we’re forced to protect it. Here are my favorite environmental films and books that will open your eyes to some of our greatest environmental threats, maybe some have already inspired you to take action an ..read more
