Change is in the air! I'm moving to Substack!

TLDR;  Moving here: https://chgowiz.substack.com I've been using Blogger, formerly Blogspot, since 2008, when I was at my old blog http://oldguyrpg.blogspot.com/. I've also been podcasting for a bit - started at Soundcloud, moved to Anchor.  Those platforms have changed quite a bit over the years. Blogger's not really moved forward all that much, and it's gotten weirder in some of its behavior. Anchor was bought by Spotify and they're clearly treating podcasters like second class citizens. I like Substack because I can have my podcast and blog all in one place! I think that will work ..read more

 8. Favorite Character  This is hard because I don't typically play, although I've forced myself to do so lately to learn and grow. Right now, my most interesting character is Sidreed, a bard/thief in a play-by-post Arduin game. He's interesting because he's the opposite of how I play most RPGs. Sidreed is cowardly, cautious & not into feats of heroism. He's made running from creatures into an art form. The game is run by "OGM" who also plays in my Western Borders AD&D game. He's doing a fantastic job!  9. Favorite dice Quite simply, 2d6. Versatile, giving me enough ra ..read more

Event submissions and badge sales have begun over at the GaryCon website! I'm going to go back to what I love to do - running games at GC!  I've got four submitted. If life and events permit me time to prepare, I might schedule a fifth - my revised "Rescue of Hommlet" game -- but it's looking more likely that'll have to wait - going to be a very busy fall/winter! Here's what I'm running: Saga of a Battlestar Action stations! The old Battlestar Lance survived the attack on the 12 Colonies with a refugee fleet of ships - but it can't jump to safety! Now it's up to you to save the fleet in ..read more

I haven't given up! June and July were extremely busy time, and to be fair, I felt these updates were getting boring as I wasn't doing anything particularly interesting or exciting, outside of the way I stocked Level 8 -- but revealing that would be revealing spoilers!  In general terms, I just picked a theme of tough monsters, as well as swarms of lower level monsters. This will be interesting to see how the players handle the possibility of facing ten to twenty times their numbers.  I also wrote up a sublevel, and might have been inspired by a certain Diablo secret level...  ..read more

I'm normally shy about these things, but thought "What the heck" and wanted to share some of the things that make me happy about playing RPG games. So... here you go! Days 1 - 7! 1. First RPG played (this year) AD&D/1e on 4 Jan 2. First RPG Gamemaster  I honestly do not remember his name. It was at a gamestore in Milford Ohio, and I was one of the rare teens the adults allowed into their AD&D game. I do remember getting bored after a few months and I stopped playing in that campaign. Or maybe I just wanted to be the GM myself ? 3. First RPG bought (this year) A flash drive ..read more

Eastern Borders AD&D game: 7/23 session: After resupplying at Dragonsbray, the PCs followed up on rumors of strange livestock deaths, ending up at an abandoned farmstead. Classic Traveller Supplement - Seluna's Veil

I participated in my first "jam" back in June and used the opportunity to flesh out a portion of a subsector for my potential Traveller/Battlestar Galactica campaign. So, Seluna's Veil was created! Seluna's Veil - hosted on itch.io SPOILER WARNING: If you're going to be a player in my campaign, you might want to skip reading this supplement.  Despite the last fifty years of war with the Cylons, adventurous Scouts have begun actively exploring Seluna’s Veil. We have already found several systems already with a rich variety of features, some even harboring alien animal and plant ..read more

DM Tip - Making a six-level dungeon out of a single map
Chicagowiz's Games
by

I had a problem - I wanted to create a dungeon that would challenge my players with increasing danger, but I didn't want to make it have multiple levels. I'd never done anything like that before, so I went back to an inspiration that dates from the beginning months of TSR and Dungeons & Dragons. Back in 1972, a young David Megarry was participating in a new style of game in Minneapolis. As a result of playing this "Blackmoor" game, he had developed a prototype board game based on exploring a dungeon. There's some thought that this game may have played a hand in influencing the rules ..read more

(continuing from May's OD&D and AD&D game recaps - 500 characters or less each!) Eastern Borders AD&D game: 6/4 session: With enemies vanquished and myconid friend rescued, the PCs dispelled a magical circle and then tried to destroy a Chaos idol. This did not go well at first, as the idol proved difficult to damage and fought back with blasts of Chaos-energy. Finally, the mage used her new wand and found out it shot fireballs... as the top of the tower disintegrated and collapsed into a pile of stone. The PCs began a long trek back through a blizzard, finding she ..read more

Three things I learned from running Classic Traveller for the first time
Chicagowiz's Games
by
10M ago
Back in early May, I posted about a crazy idea of mashing up the two Battlestar Galactica series into one setting, and running it using Classic Traveller.  Since then, I've fleshed out this concept into a subsector, some alterations to chargen, a submission to GameHoleCon which was accepted and now a series of playtest games of that same scenario. The effort took flight on Monday (12 June) and it was a fantastic experience! It was definitely worth the 45 year wait. The players all said they had fun, we explored an option in that scenario with some moral/ethical decisions that playe ..read more
